Meet Martha Witkowski of Root Counseling, LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Martha Witkowski.

Hi Martha, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Root Counseling began as both a personal and professional dream—to make therapy more accessible for everyone, myself included. After having my first child in 2019, I found myself on maternity leave, realizing that returning to a traditional therapy setting just wasn’t compatible with the kind of parent I wanted to be. That’s when the idea for an online therapy practice was born.

At the time—pre-COVID—telehealth wasn’t widely used, but I thought, “If this makes therapy more convenient and sustainable for me, it will probably do the same for clients.” So I built our first website with my newborn on my lap, and Root Counseling came to life.

Since then, the practice has grown in ways I never could have imagined. My husband joined me in 2021, and together we’ve expanded our team to include two additional clinicians. What began as a simple idea born out of necessity has evolved into a thriving practice built on accessibility, authenticity, and balance.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t always been a smooth road, but every challenge has helped shape how we do things today.

One of our biggest struggles early on was finding our flow with marketing—figuring out how to authentically communicate who we are and attract the kind of clients who really align with our values. As an online practice, that took some trial and error.

We also realized that not everyone is looking for what we offer—some clients prefer in-person therapy or want to use insurance. We made the intentional decision not to take insurance because it allows us to prioritize quality over quantity, honor our clinicians’ time and energy, and provide truly personalized care. That choice has meant slower, more organic growth at times—but despite that, we’ve built a thriving practice that reflects our values and serves clients who deeply connect with our approach.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Root Counseling is a virtual therapy practice created to make high-quality, relational therapy more accessible—without sacrificing the depth and connection that real healing requires. We specialize in trauma-informed care, attachment-based work, and nervous system regulation. Many of our clients come to us because they’ve already “done therapy before,” but they’re looking for something deeper—something that helps them understand their patterns, rebuild trust in themselves, and feel more grounded in their lives.

We’re known for creating a calming, authentic atmosphere where clients feel seen and understood rather than pathologized. Every clinician on our team shares a trauma-informed, holistic approach that blends nervous system awareness, EMDR, and parts work with real-life practicality.

What sets us apart is that we prioritize authenticity over perfection, and sustainability over hustle. We don’t take insurance because we want the freedom to provide care that is ethical, unhurried, and built around the client—not the system. That philosophy also guides our growing list of offerings, which now includes virtual support groups that connect people around shared experiences in a safe, guided space.

Brand-wise, I’m most proud that Root Counseling feels like what it stands for—calm, grounded, and real. It started as a small dream from my laptop during maternity leave, and it’s now a thriving practice with a team that genuinely believes in what we do.

If readers take one thing away, I’d want them to know that therapy doesn’t have to feel clinical or intimidating. Healing can feel human, collaborative, and deeply empowering—and that’s the heart of Root Counseling.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
There are a few ways people can connect or collaborate with us at Root Counseling.

For clients, the simplest way to work with us is by visiting our website www.therootcounseling.com
, where they can read about our clinicians, book a consultation, or join one of our virtual support groups. These groups are a great option for people who want community and guided support without committing to weekly therapy.

For other professionals, we love collaborating with like-minded therapists, wellness providers, and community organizations who share our trauma-informed, holistic values. Whether that’s through referrals, guest writing, podcast conversations, or joint workshops, we’re always open to partnerships that help make mental health care more approachable and human.

And for anyone who simply wants to support what we’re doing—sharing our posts, spreading the word, or referring a friend truly makes a difference. Root Counseling has grown entirely through authentic connection, and that’s how we plan to keep growing.
