Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Garee
Hi Emily, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I first became interested in skincare as a teenager struggling with acne. After dermatologist appointments, numerous different products, and several mental breakdowns, I started doing my own skincare research. Nothing seemed to be helping, so I wanted to figure out for myself what would work and why. The goal was to fix my own personal skin issues, and I didn’t realize how much I would enjoy the learning and what it would grow into.
Researching one ingredient at a time to incorporate personally, I eventually had a complex knowledge of skincare ingredients and products. I dove into the skin layers and how they interact with the skin, as well as in what order and how frequently to use the products, and what to or what not to combine. I became addicted to learning more about the skin, and really loved sharing the luxurious routine with friends and family, sharing and educating others. These are the signs I should’ve listened to to make the jump to esthetics sooner, but we got there eventually.
Amidst these skincare troubles, I graduated highschool and went to college for marketing and design. Knowing I enjoyed skincare, I thought dermatology could be my path, but that was rather short lived. Fresh out of college, I applied to several different jobs, hearing little to nothing back and feeling depressed by the options. Nothing lit me up, knowing that in the back of my mind I loved spa, skincare, and wellness related everything. I was scared to pursue something outside of my degree and pay for another schooling.
After failed job applications and career confusion, I finally took the leap to start esthetics school. It was 5 months of making friends, learning, having fun, and chasing my dreams. I met with whoever I could get in contact with to talk about career, personal development, and life to figure out what could help me in my journey.
Just before graduating esthetics school, I was presented with the opportunity to go solo out of school, which was the ultimate goal, but after a few years. The opportunity was too perfect, and I jumped on it. Within a month, Pronoia Beauty LLC was formed. I graduated school, ordered the products I needed, bought training, and so much more. Over the following months I learned so much about owning and operating a business, and about being an esthetician and offering other beauty services. I have fallen so in love with my career and the services that I offer, and I could not be any more grateful for the journey I’ve been on. I’ve never been more productive, motivated, and proud of who I am and what I do. I am learning and growing and am excited to see what this next year of business brings me.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I don’t believe that any business started on a truly smooth road. However, all things considered, everything has gone exceptionally well. I absolutely love what I do, and it makes it easy to pour time, resources, and energy into my business. Most of the time, I feel that I get to do the work, rather than having to. Through the process, I’ve learned so much and grown as a person and an esthetician. I have learned to be grateful for the struggles, because they help me grow and to become the best version of myself yet (and then I can provide even better for my clients!)
There really is no guidebook to going solo as an esthetician (at least not one that I had), and I quickly learned all the hats that I needed to wear. Outside of the esthetic services that I’ve learned, trained on, and crafted, I am also a business owner. I am the content creator, editor, scheduler, the face of marketing and finance, I am inventory management, and so much more. I clean, organize, service, plan, execute, and so much more. It has taken some time to get comfortable with each of these roles, as well as solidifying my brand, values, and voice as a business owner. Learning to leverage social media was a whole other struggle for me. As someone that was never very consistent on social media, the idea of posting and making stories for every single day on top of my job sounded daunting. However, I will say I’ve come to really love the creative side of content creation, including video making and talking to the camera, and I am excited for the community that it is building.
Looking back, there are definitely things that I would do differently knowing what I know now. However, with that being said, I don’t truly regret anything. I strongly believe that everything happens for a reason, and makes me a better version of myself in the long term. Through the losses, hardships, and hard conversations, I take note of what I can learn in the moment and how I can do better moving forward. The goal is to fail forward, or in other words, to learn and grow quickly.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
In the spa, I offer services such as facials, waxing, lashes and brows. However, I would say that my specialty is facials. I got into the beauty industry for skincare, and just happened to fall in love with other services as well. Specifically, my luxury facial is likely what really sets me apart. I use various modalities such as hydradermabrasion, radiofrequency, and microcurrent with LED.
The beauty industry is so much more than little spa services and washing faces. What I have learned is that the details really do matter, and it creates an overall transformative experience. In today’s society, it can be hard to feel like we are meeting beauty standards, like we aren’t good enough. The spa is an empowering place to enhance your natural beauty, to build confidence, to share secrets and vent, to always walk out feeling better than you did when you walk in. Not only this, but relaxing services that calm the mind and soul, that refresh us. It is taking time for ourselves and making our wellness a priority.
What sets me apart is my motives. I lead with my values, and with creating value for my clients – because I have been through times when I don’t feel confident in my skin and I know how that creeps into so many other aspects of our lives. My goal is to help people feel confident, like they don’t want to stop looking at themselves, like they’re confident as they are, like they can wake up with beautiful lashes or brows or glowing skin. Of course a business is meant to make money, but I truly do believe that the money will follow doing good business. Providing results, as well as a luxurious and rejuvenating experience is my priority.
My mindset shows through my name choice. Pronoia is the belief that the world conspires in your favor. I chose this name because I love the positive spin that it takes on life. Choosing to look at the glass as always half full really does put you in a place to notice more opportunities and positive aspects of your life, and I truly believe that it does make you happier in general.
