Today we’d like to introduce you to Reyyan Khan.
Reyyan, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started as a freshman in college at Colorado State University. When Coronavirus attacked, I was sent home and dropped out for the first time. Since then, I have dropped out of college 2 more times, each time attacking a new business idea with varying levels of success. At 20 years old, while working on converting a decommissioned school bus into a fully functional RV, using money I had saved up working fast food jobs and reselling shoes, I found out that my girlfriend was pregnant! I did my best to do right by her and our soon-to-be-born daughter. I began working renovating garages full time, took out a mortgage on a condo in West Chester, and had a shotgun wedding. As the due date got closer and closer, I realized I was living slightly below paycheck to paycheck and was not providing the kind of life I wanted to provide for my wife and child. This motivated me to find extra ways to make money. I picked up all kinds of odd jobs, landscaping, siding, roofing, gutters, painting, etc.
One day, while cleaning out my truck, I called my father and asked him if he had ever had his car detailed. He told me he has, and he even paid $400 for the service. I knew then that I had found my newest side job. Starting out with a shop vac, generator, and pressure washer, I began detailing cars for friends, family, and associates. Within my first month, I had made more in my free time detailing cars than I had working full-time renovating garages. November of 2022, I founded the LLC and began detailing professionally as Every Detail Car Detailing. By January 6, my daughter’s birthday, I quit my job and took on detailing full-time. At the time of this interview, I have seen great financial success and learned an incredible amount about what running a small business really looks like. I’m proud to say that I now have 2 employees on my payroll and have expanded our services to include everything detail related.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has, and it hasn’t been a smooth road. There are a ton of challenges with starting a small business. At the beginning, it was just a side job, and it was wintertime, so finding the time and the daylight to do jobs while working full time was difficult. My equipment was cheap, and things were bursting from the sub-freezing temperatures. My truck bed wasn’t large enough to hold all my equipment and products, and I had to invest in a trailer. I had never designed a website before, and designing one for a service-based business was difficult. Marketing strategies are hard to choose from, and search engine optimization was a completely foreign concept to me.
But you live, and you learn. I’m still pretty young and adaptable. I can find a way to build a business and raise a child.
