Daily Inspiration: Meet Brittney Deschler

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittney Deschler.

Hi Brittney, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Oh gosh, my story… I don’t even know where to begin. There have been so many little things that formed my path, it’s hard to really give a Cliff Notes version…

Thanks to my grandparents, I practically grew up in front of the camera and understood the sentimental value of capturing life’s little moments at a young age. I loved thumbing through photo albums and seeing the personalities of family members who have passed shine through their pictures.

Fast forward to high school, I was a T.A. for my graphic design teacher. One day, I was telling her my plans to see some up-and-coming bands at a local venue over the weekend, and she encouraged me to sign out one of the school cameras to photograph the concert. I had NO IDEA how to operate a DSLR, and the photos were HORRIBLE, but I’ve been in love with photography (especially concert photography) ever since. However, it was hard enough to convince my family to allow me to go to college for graphic design — I knew that I would have an even harder time convincing them I wanted to skip college, travel the world, and photograph bands. So, photography remained a hobby until I was in my mid-twenties.

After purchasing my first DSLR in 2014, I began photographing small weddings for family and friends, then slowly started branching out to portraits. In 2018, I left my corporate, retail job to finally pursue my dreams as a full-time photographer. Since then, I’ve photographed everything from senior and family portraits to concerts and motorsports.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
LOL, absolutely not.

When I first started my business, I JUST took out a car loan, and our apartment lease was up, so the pressure to build my client base was looming over me almost immediately. I struggled with what services to offer and how much to charge, so I just copied what others in the industry were doing.

I was inexperienced and not truly authentic, which was attracting the wrong type of client for me. So, I had to go back to square one.

Once I found my style, my voice, and invested in a graphic designer to help me rebrand, COVID-19 shut everything down. Luckily, I had a partner who could work during that time and help with finances, but it was still hard.

Burnout was another thing I struggled with because, in addition to building my business, I worked two part-time jobs at other local small businesses to help keep my bills paid between projects.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
At Misfit Creative Co., we specialize in alternative photography — not in the traditional sense of the printmaking techniques, but photography services for those who march to the beat of their own drum. Our goal is to help fellow misfits embrace their quirks and tell their story through images that truly reflect who they are.

We are mostly known and booked for our senior portraits, family portraits, and boudoir sessions. However, I love my concert and motorsport photography work the most.

What were you like growing up?
Honestly, I don’t think my personality has changed much. I might be a little calmer.
Interests, that’s a whole other embarrassing story — at one point, I wanted to be a pop star. I used to hold concerts for my family all the time. Thank goodness those were never filmed, I hope.
