Rising Stars: Meet Shaughnessy Curry of Westerville Oh

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shaughnessy Curry.

Shaughnessy, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
So here’s the thing. I got tricked into doing cosmetology. God definitely has a plan that goes far beyond my understanding. I wanted to be a fashion designer. They closed down that program at the career center the year before I was able to apply. All my friends chose a career path so I just landed on cosmetology. Now I’m doing hair and makeup for local fashion designers and movies. I’m also taking on my own clients and building a name for myself. My career has been a set up for greater opportunities since I’ve begun and I can’t be more grateful.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’ll say this. God has guided every step. I trust his plans are leading me somewhere great. On the other hand I know that faith without works is dead. So as much as I trust his plan I have to put in the work to know how to maintain it. The learning and growing is where the complications come. I’m a creative stepping into business for crying out loud. Life will always be up and down but just like that little machine that monitors your heart in a hospital, it’s a reminder that we are still alive.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a licensed cosmetologist that specializes in healthy hair, skin, and self love. I’m not only a creative, I’m also a business woman. I’m most proud of the fact that I can show people that black women can have talent, run businesses, be professional, and provide luxury while staying true to their roots. What sets me apart is the fact that I don’t conform to boxes. I’m always growing and learning. I’m never too good to show my process. I’m honest with my capabilities but I don’t limit myself. I provided a safe space for my clients to do the same. They can learn, be loved and not be totally judge for the things they do.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
If you are starting out in the hair and makeup industry people tell you to find your lane and stick to it. Truth being told it’s okay to be a sponge. I’ll never recommend starting solo. Work under companies and old school salon owners. Observe not only the good but learn what you don’t like. Watch financial patterns. Build your core clients. Don’t ever feel stuck or stagnant because we don’t live in a constant world. We like in a world that will always recycle trends or create new ones. Don’t compare yourself to people on your same field because no one has what you have.
