Rising Stars: Meet Robbie García of Lenguaje Deportivo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robbie García.

Hi Robbie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Well… Lenguaje Deportivo is a project that we have been working on for a little less than 4 years, but it was not until January of this year that we were able to start with it. Our reason to start was the lack of opportunities that exist in the sports media, yes, we really search through all the existing ways to find a space or at least have only one opportunity to demonstrate our vision, that is why the project was stopped for a long time, we looked for all kinds of ways to get an opportunity within the sports media, we didn’t care about prestige, we just wanted someone to believe in us and give us an opportunity, an opportunity that we never got and here is a life lesson… “if you don’t find an opportunity, create your own opportunity”. The beginning has not been easy at all, but we believe that our approach is very settled, we have an approach, a mission, and a vision that we believe is what has allowed us to get here, get to have this opportunity, this interview which really, we appreciate.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been an easy road at all, mainly because our approach is very different from what is currently used, at present, the media dedicated to any sport, whether national or international, it seems that they can’t go anywhere without generating controversy, without inciting hatred, it seems that the only thing that matters is to have engagement at the expense of the athlete, sport or organization involved and unfortunately, that is already too entrenched and not only in the media, but it is also already entrenched in the same fans and followers of the sport, that is the biggest challenge we are facing because in Lenguaje Deportivo our approach tells us that we will be an objective media, that we will say what everyone thinks but nobody says, but yes, always directing ourselves with the due respect to the person or organization involved. We at Lenguaje Deportivo have the mission that each of our news, reviews, notes, and columns are written with the aim of inspiring change in sport and trying to change the way in which the media is being directed, can’t continue to incite hatred and less in the things that we still have left that have the power to unite us as human beings, well… Now maybe you already know the reason why not sports media gave us a chance, well… We are facing all this, it is not an easy path and we still have a long way to go and I repeat it again, thanks to this opportunity to this interview it shows us that we are on the right path.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Lenguaje Deportivo are a sports news outlet, mainly focused on Soccer, NFL, F1, and other major sporting events, sometimes we cover directly from the stadiums we have the opportunity to attend, but most of the time, we follow from home to upload content to our social networks. We are not sure if people can locate us yet, but if so, we believe it is because of our section called “Hablemos De” which is mainly a sports column focused on giving our opinion on a specific sports topic, whether it is an athlete, organization, sport., etc… Right now, what we are most proud of is being able to finally start this project, we all know that the first step is the most difficult of all and definitely being able to take that step is something that makes us feel proud and that there are people who like our concept is something that rewards us and being able to have opportunities like this, that the media are interested in knowing our story is really great. We at Lenguaje Deportivo have it very clear, we can have a very different approach and mission than any other sports media, but what we really want to identify us from the others is our vision, yes, we started in this because of the lack of opportunities, but we were aware that our main objective was to create a precedent, although we want to position ourselves as an important sports media, we don’t want it to tell people who didn’t believe in us that they made a mistake by rejecting us, our vision and our commitment is with our communities, our main goal is to inspire the new generations and we are not talking about sports media, we are talking about the next athletes, our vision means creating a precedent with those who dream of becoming athletes, in Lenguaje Deportivo we understand how powerful sport is, we know that sport changes lives, saves people and above all inspires people to want to improve themselves every day, we all start with a dream, Lenguaje Deportivo want to be the source, we want to be the support, we want to be the promoter of many of those dreams, that’s why we are globetrotters, count with volunteers in all parts of the world who believe in this project, who share our vision, we are committed to all the communities in which we have volunteers in: Cincinnati, Cleveland, Dodge City, El Paso in the United States, Ciudad Juárez, Torreon, Cuencame in Mexico. We know that it is a long way, but we are so committed to wanting to be that change that sport needs, to be that source that inspires trust and protection for athletes and above all respects sport and organizations, to show that there is the right way to do things without the need to hurt people.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
When I was little, I could say that my personality was always that of a dreamer… Growing up in a violent place made me take refuge in sports, I know very well that I’m not the only one who sees sports as the only way out of neighborhood. Since I was a child I never liked getting into trouble with anyone, besides I always had a lot of empathy towards people, that is why the vision of Lenguaje Deportivo is focused on trying to be that medium that drives the new generations of athletes, to be that place that offers people, especially young people, to be that refuge, to be that source that changes and saves their lives, that movement that inspires the change that sport requires and to be that promoter of new aspirations, new opportunities, and new dreams. As a child I always had great thoughts about big dreams and great achievements, I always knew that I wanted to have the opportunity to create a precedent of being part of something that would allow me to leave a legacy, I’ve always had infinite interests, over time I added more, but there was always one who didn’t leave, the interest of being involved with sports, from a very young age (6 years or so) I was already a “know-it-all” of sports and it was not just one of them but of several, such as… Soccer, football, baseball, tennis, basketball, cycling, and some other Olympic sport, I already had knowledge of all of them, history, teams, players, leagues, most important event, best players, coaches, I knew practically everything, I woke up with sports news, I watched all kinds of sports that were on TV and I fell asleep watching sports news, oh, and I also went to school, but that was talking to my friends about soccer or any sporting event that was about to happen, so it was sports 24/7… To this day, I think that interest in dedicating myself to something related to sports is still intact, only that as the years have passed the focus has changed, start wanting to be a soccer player, but a knee injury prevented me from doing so, I wanted to be a coach (I still want to) but not having a reference weigh heavily today, I wanted to be in a sports environment, but the lack of opportunities didn’t allow me. What I am going for is that Lenguaje Deportivo is a reflection of who I was, am, and want to be, this is my story, but it could be that of any other person in the world, those of us who make up Lenguaje Deportivo have different stories, but we share the same interests, the same goals and the same dreams that we had when we were growing up.
