Rising Stars: Meet Matt Lyon of Columbus, OH

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt Lyon

Hi Matt, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My name is Matt Lyon also known online as “HoodPanda” I am 30 years old from Columbus, OH and I am an Artist, Rollerblader and all around creative. I started Rollerblading (aggressive inline skating) at the age of 14 after breaking both of my hips in a golf cart accident. since rollerblading came into my life I have achieved sponsors and opportunities to travel the world. The lifestyle of action sports sparked my interest in creating content through the lenses of many cameras, today I strive to show my creations to the world all while making people smile and laugh through my mixed passions. HoodPanda has become not only an online persona but a brand that filters out content and clothing

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’ve hit rock bottom with inline skating in 2017 I had a really bad concussion and months later broke both arms in my forearm while attempting to do flips at a skatepark. The concussion made me painfully sensitive to sound for 3 months and when I broke the arm I was hit with real life problems like not being able to work and deciding that once healed if should still pursue my love for skating or settle for a 9-5 type of life, I got deep into yoga at the time and recovered 200% with a better mindset and healthier lifestyle. So I stand here today with 14 screws in my arm and still more motivated than ever

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
These days im spending more time behind the camera enjoying snapping pictures of my world from my perspective whether that’s inside abandoned buildings or actions shots from skate events. I have a studio where specialize in making photo prints and clothing merch

I am most known for my sketch comedy and wild skating stunts online. Ive skated nude on a highway once during the covid times then did the crate challenge with skates on my feet. I’m the only rollerblader in the world to do a ring of fire nude and ironically The latest thing I did was put out a studio fire at 400 w rich st warehouse which houses around 200 small businesses, artist and non profits.

What sets me apart from others is im not scared to hop into something or record something that most would consider crazy! I always seem to find the humor in almost every situation to remind people life shouldn’t always be taken so serious.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
When it comes to video my Insta360 camera has been great for self filming and my good friend Hawke Trackler has been my main filmer since I was a teenager. When it comes to apps I use CapCut and InShot a lot for video and photoshop express for pictures. The best resources is to keep like minded people are who keep you uplifted and staying creative
