Rising Stars: Meet Martha Pineno

Today we’d like to introduce you to Martha Pineno. She and her customers share a sweet story of survival  and success:

Whether it’s a classic chocolate chip cookie, basic brownie, or quintessential quick bread,  Ohio Baked delivers  OHmazing desserts in a neighborhood that’s as old as sliced bread.

Founded in 2016, OH Baked embraced the connection with Ohio with the un- mistakenly, edible-looking logo! A long-established artist, musician, educator, entrepreneur, Martha (aka Marti) Pineno blends and mixes creativity into every aspect of her business. Marti declares her baked goods are an art form you eat.

Home-made, home-baked – nothing pretentious. They’re treats to make you feel a connection to your closest friend, remember your grandmother with fondness, welcome  times  and conversation filled with love and laughs.

OH Baked sweet/savory treats are not a “cookie cutter” product. Everything is hand-crafted in small batches. Located  along Glenwood  corridor, part of Indian Village on the Southside of Youngstown, discover  the charming, cottage-style home, twisted, and angled  away from the road.

When weather permits, you may see OH Baked with coolers  of items  at the drivOHround bake stand. Stop by and sit on a tree  stump while you chat and chew, drink and draw, munch . . . and make music.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been  obstacle free,  but so far would  you say the journey has been  a smooth road?
The largest hurdle to jump through, and roadblock to maneuver, has been “starting from scratch” in a new town and state where my unique expertise, skill, and reputation is unfamiliar to the local community.

I also can’t sugar-coat the targeting, jealousy, misrepresentation of my state- approved-licensed home  bakery from the first day a sign was inserted in the ground. Subsequent imitation of my clever service mark branding by another business, to the unwarranted “close your bakery” threats by local officials nearly crumbled my culinary confidence. However, my pastry  perseverance prevailed.

As you know, we’re big fans  of you and your work. For our readers who might not  be as familiar, what  can you tell  them about  what  you do?
Known as “mARTi,” I explored and expressed through art and music since age nine.  I briefly considered a career  in commercial art/graphic design  but quickly realized my proclivity to be an educator was the path  to pursue.

Art Education training led me to teach High School and Elementary students for over ten years in the Pennsylvania public school  system. After early retirement, I founded a hybrid non-profit arts corporation which included art/music lessons, gallery,  eCommerce, coffeehouse/bakery.  I published five picture books, composed, and recorded seven all-instrumental CDs.  My 20-year career  was destroyed in 2011 as the result of domestic abuse.    Consequently, I developed a healing through art program “Masterpiece to Master  PEACE” to help participants reduce anxiety and overwhelm, manage mindset.  In 2014, I founded Woodwind  Medic emergency repair  service.  An enterprising spirit always guides me.

My parallel career  was as a freelance oboist  with symphonies, concert bands, chamber orchestras and community choral  groups. My favorite venue  is chamber music – quintets, quartets, trios.  Though classically trained, I have an ear for folk, jazz, new age improvisation. I’m looking  forward  to a new community connection with music.

As a multi-talented artist, musician, entrepreneur, I decided to use my creative energy  and developed a home  bakery — OH Baked! (Ohio Baked).

I produce baked goods in small batches. Items  are cooled,  cut, wrapped individually with environmentally friendly  packaging, then frozen  for delivery  or pickup.  Besides the traditional bakery product of cookies,  brownies, cupcakes, and pies … sugar-free, gluten-free, vegan options are available. Pre-orders can be picked up by appointment during the day.  Customers appreciate the availability of items  that can be ordered through Door Dash and Grubhub delivery in the evenings for dinner dessert or night-time snack. I am particularly proud  of my new podcasts: Mind the Muse and Sound Baking. You can listen to them on Apple Podcasts.  Music is passion, Art is love, Baking is comfort.

Any advice  for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I have been an entrepreneur from an early age. I self-identify as the “Masterpiece Mentor,” so most  people seek my advice and expertise.

I’m eager to find and associate with individuals who are socially conscious and operate a complementary business.

Repeat customers are my best form of advertising and lead to networking opportunities when they share  their favorable experience.
