Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Morgan.
Hi Laura, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
For most of my life, I worked in pizza shops as a manager and delivery driver. When COVID hit, I decided to take a chance and learn a new skill. In December 2020, I started working in my dining room and on my front porch, teaching myself through YouTube videos. I started posting on Facebook to promote my work, and the response took off—I’ve had nonstop orders ever since. Today, I’ve grown the business to a full-time operation with three employees, and we’re all working steadily.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced is being taken seriously in my field. As a woman in woodworking, my work was often labeled as “crafts” in the beginning, rather than recognized for the skill and craftsmanship behind it.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
The majority of my customers now are event planners. I make things for parties and weddings so it’s fun always doing something new. What makes me different is I’m a woman in a male dominated field. I also teach classes and typically it’s other women wanting to learn woodworking.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
We’ve recently moved into a larger workspace, which will allow us to expand and take on more projects moving forward. Limited space had been a major setback, so this opens the door for us to continue to grow and increase production.
