Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonathan Sartin.
Hi Jonathan, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Music has always been a part of my life. From hearing my mom and dad sing together at home or in the choir at church to finding of love of music in my teenage years. When I was 14, I started playing drums in punk band in high school, but soon realized I found more fulfillment in singing. I would spend many afternoons after school in my room listening to and singing along with different rock/metal CDs. In 2018 after years off and on fronting different groups, I took a break from playing in bands and started working at a factory in town. I remember telling my boss I was only there long enough to buy a guitar because I had sold all of mine. 2 years in January 2021, I moved to Charleston, WV to front the rock band Miles Deep, but after a short stint with the band (which ended amicably), we decided on different personal pursuits. I spent the rest of the year writing songs and playing open mics to try and build my reputation as an artist and make a name for myself. It wasn’t until August 2022 that I started booking and performing consistently as a solo artist, which led down the path towards creating my first solo EP which should be released later this year!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Luckily the road has been mostly smooth. Minor hiccups here and there, but mostly it was all self-inflicted. Sometimes growing up in a small town you feel trapped and you give up, but I always found myself coming right back to music and my love for the art of creating a song.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a singer and a songwriter. I play acoustic guitar and sing, but my strength is singing. I typically tell people my guitar skills are that of a strummer and a hummer. I bring a guitar because it looks cooler than plugging up a computer or something. I think something that sets me apart is my vocals can go from very powerful and in your face to smooth and gentle. I play out multiple times a week anywhere from KY, OH, WV, VA, TN, NC, GA, and beyond.
What matters most to you?
Writing songs is what matters most to me. There is nothing like telling a story, whether it be personal and factual or vicarious and fiction. There is something about finishing a song and having it give you chills, make you tear up, or laugh so hard you can’t breathe. It’s an experience that someone, somewhere, can relate to on some level, and you connect with each other without even meeting.
