Rising Stars: Meet Joann Houston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joann Houston.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My name is Joann Houston and I am from Columbus Ohio. I reside in Dayton Ohio and I am a Wright State Alumna. I am a Non-Profit Trade owner by day and DJ By night. My sole reason has continuously been to assist individuals in my community. My Non-Benefit “Kindness In the Culture” focuses on Community benefit and Consideration. We don’t discriminate who we offer assistance to. We serve the underserved population in all of Ohio. I also go by the Title DJ Six and the name initially came from my hometown which is Columbus (614) lol. I have continuously had a love for music and accept that moving and music may be a remedy all which is what keeps me DJing for all crowds. I accept that I am where I am nowadays by hard work, devotion, and recalling that my reason lies inside those two things.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Owning two businesses has not been easy. There are some moments where I have questioned my worth as a DJ and even a non-profit business owner. I have had troubles getting people support and also learning how to accept constructive criticism. A Big struggle for me was learning that Just because something works doesn’t mean that it can’t be improved.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in community service and Community Engagement. Kindness In The Culture focuses on helping the people around my community and providing them the resources to help them help themselves. We focus on school drives, clothing drives, feeding the homeless, and MORE! Our Motto is “It’s still cool to be kind”. DJ Six’s main purpose is to provide a diverse and fun musical experience for everyone. I am most proud of How far I’ve come as a Non-profit business owner and Also as a DJ. I believe that what sets me apart from others is my selflessness. I do not operate DJ Six and Kindness In the culture with the motivation of Money, but the Motivation to help someone through something.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
My biggest supporters has been my wife (Shontel), Friends, and my family. They have always challenged me and pushed me out of my comfort zone to better by brands/businesses. One thing I appreciate about their support is the fact that they hold me accountable.
