Hi Jayaira, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Say Word Wednesdays began in February 2024 as a monthly poetry show in Columbus, OH, dedicated to poets and poetry enthusiasts. Curated and hosted by me, Jayaira Grhim-Harvey, also known as Artistic Genius, the event stems from my 12+ years of experience as a spoken-word poet, visual artist, and published author.
The show is held every third Wednesday at a Black-owned and woman-owned art gallery run by Ludie Senatus, offering a safe, inclusive, and supportive space for creative expression. Say Word Wednesdays amplifies voices, nurtures creativity, and fosters connections by providing a platform for local poets, many of whom are performing for the first time. The name “Say Word” reflects the spirit of affirmation and authenticity we champion at each gathering.
In just 10 months, the event has grown into a vibrant community hub, consistently selling out and featuring over 40 poets while welcoming hundreds of attendees. February 2025 will mark our one-year anniversary with a special poetry slam offering cash prizes. Say Word Wednesdays is more than a show—it’s a celebration of truth, artistry, and resilience, enriching the cultural fabric of Columbus.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
This journey has been far from easy, with countless challenges along the way. Balancing my role as curator and host with the demands of being a full-time student at Ohio State University, alongside pursuing other passions, has required resilience and dedication. Yet, through it all, we’ve remained consistent. A huge part of our success comes from having a strong, passionate team committed to keeping *Say Word* thriving. I couldn’t do it without them.
Hosting at Ludie Senatus Gallery has been an absolute pleasure. Ludie’s dedication to supporting the community and providing a space for creatives to flourish has been invaluable. Above all, our attendees are the heartbeat of our monthly events. Their safe and positive energy infuses the space each month, fueling us and making *Say Word* what it is.

Jayaira Grhim-Harvey, also known as Artistic Genius, is a Columbus State graduate and a multi-talented artist, acclaimed spoken-word poet, visual artist, and 3x published author. Since 2011, she has captivated audiences with her powerful poetry and vivid artwork, earning recognition through numerous awards. Born from personal challenges, her art serves as both an outlet and a way to inspire others, delivering high-energy, uplifting performances. Inspired by poets like Sunni Patterson and Nikki Giovanni, Jayaira’s unique style continues to touch hearts. She is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Social Work at Ohio State University. How do you think about luck?
Luck isn’t something I focus on, as I believe more in faith and trusting God to guide my journey in the most honorable way possible. My faith grounds me, and it’s through humility and a commitment to knowledge that I build confidence in everything I do. Whether in life or business, I strive to stay humble, keep learning, and give my best effort, knowing that this mindset shapes me into the best version of myself.
