Rising Stars: Meet Elan Eichler

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elan Eichler.

Elan Eichler

Hi Elan, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I’m originally from Portland, OR, where I grew up heavily inspired by Rose City’s hip-hop legends, The Lifesavas. I first started making music when I was 13. My best friend Jack Baars, aka J-Biz, would make beats on the beatmaking software Fruityloops, and I would write raps in his basement. We soon joined 2 of our other friends – Brady B and Harry Mack – and made music and put on our own shows throughout high school as the group State of Mind. In college, I had the opportunity to further develop my skills as part of a trio of rappers, The Hungry Emcees. I got to bring my love of kaiju and monster movies to my music as part of the group Monster’s Ink.

I moved to Cleveland, OH in May 2023 and have been truly inspired by the level of passion and creativity bubbling up in the city’s music and arts scene. I connected with Cleveland’s own AOxProd and in under 6 months, we created more than 20 tracks that we trimmed down and released on 12/11/23 as the album Boom Bap Derby. I have also expanded into Twitch streaming, launched a Patreon, and am getting ready to start a podcast. It’s going to be a busy 2024!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I have been so fortunate to get to know some incredible artists that have inspired me to keep going and push myself further. From my Monster’s Ink brother, Julius Powell, to my own dad, Dan Eichler, who is a true music lover and a music booker who gave me the opportunity to start a monthly showcase (still running to this day!) I feel very lucky to have the people I do in my life. In Cleveland, I have had the absolute pleasure to start working with producer/DJ Pinstrype Kouzin, and he has reinvigorated my love for performing live.

The biggest struggle I have faced is my lifelong struggle with bipolar disorder, especially the depressive side of bipolar. Making music during periods of depression has been really tough, and I have been forced to take breaks to focus on getting back to a good place where I can be creative.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I make nerdy hip-hop. I write lots of songs, perform live around town, and have even started freestyling and writing songs live on Twitch.com/Mighty_Misc.

What sets me apart? I can make a song about literally anything – from rapping about my favorite superhero team (the X-Men) to speaking on mental health struggles to my favorite Cleveland restaurants and cafes (the Hungry Emcee video series on social media).

I am most proud of the album I made in 2019 titled Old Beats Nude Rhymes. While cleaning out the closest in my childhood room, I discovered a stack of burned CDs filled with beats my friends Jack and Brady had made when they were between the ages of 13 to 17. I had written songs to some of these back in the day, but decades later, I felt like I could finally do these beats justice. Inspired by these old beats, I made an album.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
A good cup of black coffee, Godzilla movies, 90s hip-hop, Star-Trek Deep Space 9 – all things I enjoy and find comforting.
