Rising Stars: Meet Cioxcia Cayson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cioxcia Cayson

Hi Cioxcia, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
First thing first. God. God is better than the worlds next best thing and without him I am nothing, no one. I would not be close to where I am today if it wasn’t for him. I’m so grateful for his grace on my family and I. I started doing hair to cover up abuse in our homes. My mother during my time with her was very abusive. She was into drugs, and it really changed her. I really was embarrassed as a kid to tell people anything like that was going on with me. So, I learned how to braid to cover our faces so nobody would ask me what happened. I was always protective and private. Especially of my siblings. Then once I was separated from my them in foster care, braiding stuck with me. I always felt a sisterhood or brotherhood while braiding. Then I got my first $10, 10 times for some hair services, and it went from there.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No. Life was rough. I had white mom and black father who was both on drugs. He was functioning and she wasn’t. That was a wild experience to be watching as a kid. I’m the oldest too, and none of my siblings was even old enough to know what I saw. Then we went to foster care and in my first placement, I got separated from them. I ended up growing up the only child and not knowing where any of them was. I then kind of felt out of place and a loner early which I am glad to have that trait because I REALLY BE STANDING ON BUSINESS, and I’m passionate about all my endeavors. I ended up getting adopted by my beautiful grandmother when I was 11 and at 13, she passed away. Then I had to live with my dad’s oldest sister. She was a Deputy Superintendent of a Juvenile Correctional Facility. She was so fucking strict. She kicked me out at 18. Thats when I started to turn up for the best. My adult years really turned me up! I really had my back.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a Celebrity Licensed Cosmetologist who specializes in Locs, Natural Hair, & Wholistic Hair Growth. I had to ask around to see what I was known for because I’ve actually never thought about that. When I did, I learned that people love and know me for honesty, advocacy, realness and perfection. I also like to stand up for what’s right and take pride in making sure everyone I come into contact with is comfortable, a big heart with a powerful punch. I am most proud of being a mother and becoming someone who preserved no matter and what life has thrown at me. From the good to the bad, I beat the odds and survived and is willing to help anyone who deserves along the way. I feel set apart because I am self-made, I am self-motivated, selfless and I’m divinely driven. I feel that in this new day everyone is so fictional, and make everything look good online, and is unreal and I take pride in never letting that happened for me to be able to feed my kid.

How do you define success?
I define success with being able to raise great generations after you. Growing, staying sane and loving. I have never been into materialistic things. Success to me is doing what you like with your own time. You are never promised the next moment and yet it is here right now, just for you. Being able to do what you want with your time is the greatest gift god can give besides children. Houses, clothes, shoes, is nice. But is your child’s college paid for? It’s not about me anymore, I got to do this for the next ones after me who don’t think there is a way out and help them find their way out. Thats when I KNEW I was really successful when I seen the kids I raised and/or in the village, become great people.
