Rising Stars: Meet (Anthony) “Kevin” Corvo of Hilliard, Ohio

Today we’d like to introduce you to (Anthony) “Kevin” Corvo.

Hi (Anthony) “Kevin”, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Tim Hoffman, a business owner and member of Franklin Street Creative, and Jordan Smith, also a business owner and with Franklin Street, approached me about starting a local news outlet- only for Hilliard- that became the Hilliard Beacon.

I was previously acquainted with both men having been a reporter for the Hilliard Northwest News and Hilliard ThisWeek, since 1999. This Week acquired Northwest News, merging the papers. Gannett bought ThisWeek and shuttered the paper in 2023.

Tim and Jordan felt the community still needed a local news outlet- focused on only things in Hilliard- and we collaborated to launch the Beacon.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
While I do not consider it an entirely smooth road, there have not been, in my estimation, any significant challenges.
We did need to relocate the studio, owing to the business choices of the owner, and paid subscriptions have not grown recently after a finite amount of supporters came on board during the first year.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My 29-year career as a journalist was centered on community news, in multiple central Ohio cities, but a majority in Hilliard, Dublin, and Whitehall.

I covered local government (City Council, boards of education, township trustees), law enforcement (publishing police reports and covering an occasional criminal trial), and business (new restaurants, commercial and residential constriction, and rezoning applications).

I also had the opportunity to write features on people achieving a personal or professional achievement of one kind of another.

I am pleased that some of my work shared the achievements of others, made others feel valued, or, in some small way, brought about a change such as a city code in Hilliard that set a policy for the display of wall murals in the city’s historical district.

The Beacon has provided readers with the opportunity to know more about City Council and school board candidates that other media has not provided, as well as further insight into actions that can impact daily life such as fuel cells as a data center.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
I am a 1988 graduate of Hilliard High School. There was only one in 1988 and my high school is now Station Sixth Grade School. The current Davidson High School was not yet constructed. I graduated from OSU in 1993 and remain a Hilliard resident.
My parents moved to Hilliard in 1972.
