Rising Stars: Meet Amanda Dix of Bowling Green

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Dix.

Amanda Dix

Amanda, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I just celebrated 5 years in business this past January. I was originally teaching myself how to make my at the time, daughter’s 1st birthday cake. I had made a few random ones and then a Christmas-themed one for a party and posted it online, which attracted a lot of attention. I always laugh seeing it now because it was very sloppy, and I’ve come so far now! After posting that one, though, I was encouraged to make a page for my baking, which I did. I was asked immediately to make this 2-tier large baby shower cake and a small unicorn cake. These were my first paid cakes, and after that, it just took off. I originally lived in Woodville, Ohio, at the time and did a few Farmer’s Markets where I’d sell out within the first hour or 2 but was booked several months out right away. After about 1.5 years in business, we moved to where we currently live, in Bowling Green, Ohio. I was super nervous that I’d lose customers and have trouble getting new customers. Thankfully, though, my customer base keeps growing each year and keeps me busier and busier. I’m super thankful for all the support I’ve gotten in both cities and everyone that travels to me.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Definitely not smooth. I’m a WAHM, homeschooler of an almost 6yo and 2yo girls. So, finding the perfect balance of work and home life can be difficult. I also broke my elbow in December of 2020, when I was knee-deep in 300+ hot cocoa bombs, so I worked with one arm for a few months with the help of friends and my husband. My oldest daughter and I also had a lot of new allergies and health issues come up in 2022, which was pretty mentally exhausting on top of being a one-woman show running a business. I’ve never taken a class or anything either, so everything I learn is from my own research and practice, error, and trial runs. Sometimes, things do not end up how I envision them, but I always take it as a learning opportunity.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in luxury-style cakes, cupcakes, push-pops, cakesicles, and cookie cakes. I offer regular, gluten-free, dye-free, vegan, and other dietary options as well. I love to create unique showstopper centerpieces to your events that people will remember. I typically work with buttercream only but I will use chocolate and fondant for smaller details, so I love to add texture and fun details with buttercream that people are surprised isn’t fondant. I never copy an artist’s work, so each piece will be unique.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Just go for it! Watch the videos, practice a lot, and challenge yourself to be unique. Don’t take orders that won’t bring you joy or aren’t your style!
