Today we’d like to introduce you to Wayne Rhoden.
Hi Wayne, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
For me, it started in my mother’s womb. During her pregnancy, she developed a craving for music; she went out and purchased a record player and started what became an impressive record collection. It was then that they knew music would be a major part of my life.
I was 4 years old when I started to mess with her stereo system playing artists such as Connie Francis, Patsy Cline, Kenny Rogers, Toots and the Maytals, Bob Marley, and more. I was fortunate to get my own stereo system for my room, so I had to start my own record collection, and my first record was “This Train” by Culture. I realized I had a passion for music because it brought people together and took them to a happy place. Family members and friends would then ask me to play at their parties. But I wanted more; I would play around with the microphone then found out that I like mic toasting (Reggae Rapping). While developing my craft people would be amazed, so I kept on pushing without any interest of making records although I’ve been asked so many times the reason being I would perform against very popular artists with hit songs and while they use their hit songs to get a reaction from the audience, I would use a song that they haven’t heard before and get a standing ovation so that kept me sharp, until one day a friend of mine begged me to do a record with him and that’s how my recording career started.
After recording and touring my mother introduced me to Dan Zanes, and everything changed. We started to do Family Music together and touring all over, but there’s other aspects of the music industry I was drawn to like the production side. Yes, I wear many hats, I guess, because I easily get bored,
So, while I’m producing, I’m also mixing, and now I am doing video production. Thanks to my competitive nature this boy from the countryside in Linstead Jamaica is now a multi-award winner, peaked number 7 on the Billboard charts, and was seen on the Disney Channel with Dan Zanes and Friends. Not bad for a boy from the country.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It was not all smooth due to health issues. Part of my journey I had kidney failure and was on dialysis for a few years, then on life support twice and the doctors thought I would not survive, but on Dec. 3, 2017, I had a Kidney transplant.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I started out doing music for kids then I broadened the spectrum and created positive appropriate songs for everyone. I specialize in music to motivate the mind.
I’m known as a disc jockey and reggae artist, but I’m mostly known for the work I’ve done with Dan Zanes and now as Father Goose Music where I’m creating a little space for myself.
I’m most proud when a fan sends me a letter about how my music impacted their life or their kids’ lives. Also, when Irie Goose (my son) and my “Stop Da Bullying” track was used as a theme song for “The Above the Influence Rally” and also “I Can Make It” as the theme song for their Graduation ceremony and prom.
What sets me apart is my sense of humor, my work ethic, and I’m also a big kid at heart.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Words are very powerful.
