Today we’d like to introduce you to Taira Fischer.
Hi Taira, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve had a passion for working with children for as long as I can remember. During college, as I gained hands-on experience in various settings, I began to notice a troubling pattern: many children’s behaviors were being misunderstood. This observation sparked a deeper curiosity and ultimately led me to pursue a career in pediatric occupational therapy.
While earning my Doctorate in Occupational Therapy, I had the opportunity to complete a residency at the STAR Institute for Sensory Processing — a leading organization in the field. The intensive training I received there gave me a powerful, evidence-based framework for understanding sensory processing differences. It also resonated with what I instinctively believed: that when we help children and caregivers better understand their bodies and their sensory needs, we unlock their ability to thrive.
After graduating in 2017, I began working in a sensory-focused clinic while continuing to build my expertise in sensory integration, self-regulation, and neurodevelopment. By 2020, I was ready to launch my own pediatric occupational therapy business, Sensory Savvy Kids, with a mission to support children through a personalized, regulation-centered approach. However, like many others, I had to pivot during the uncertainty of the pandemic. I used that time to lay the groundwork — creating a logo, building a website, and establishing a presence on Google.
Over time, families began to find me organically, drawn to the specific services I offered. I began seeing clients in a rented space and slowly grew a caseload that allowed me to take the leap into my own physical location in July 2023.
Today, I’m in the exciting phase of expanding my team and growing Sensory Savvy Kids to reach even more families. Through my Sensory Savvy Program, I’m proud to help children feel empowered in their bodies and confident in the world around them — and to support the families who love them every step of the way.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t always been a smooth journey. I launched my business shortly after my daughter’s first birthday, stepping into entrepreneurship as a first-time mother. Balancing the demands of motherhood and running a business has been both challenging and deeply rewarding. I could not have done it without the unwavering support of my family, friends, and most importantly, my significant other.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Sensory Savvy Kids?
Sensory Savvy Kids is a pediatric occupational therapy practice in Hilliard, Ohio, that specializes in helping children with sensory processing and regulation challenges. We support children who may struggle with big emotions, behavioral outbursts, motor challenges, difficulty focusing, or seeming overwhelmed by everyday environments. At our core, we help families understand their child’s unique sensory needs, provide supportive strategies, while also building the child’s underlying processing skills to learn how to better understand their bodies and brains, so they can participate more fully in daily life — at home, at school, and in the community.
What sets us apart is our highly specialized, sensory-informed approach. Our founder is residency-trained through the STAR Institute for Sensory Processing, which means we use a regulation-first model grounded in relationships, neuroscience, and child development. We’re not just looking at behaviors — we’re asking why the behaviors are happening and helping children develop the internal skills to navigate their world with confidence.
We are known for our warm, relationship-based care and for creating an environment where children feel safe, empowered, and understood. Every child we work with receives a customized treatment plan that focuses on their unique strengths and goals.
Brand-wise, we’re most proud of the trust we’ve built with local families and our reputation for being a go-to resource for children with sensory needs. Our Sensory Savvy Program is designed to be accessible and family-friendly, offering both one-on-one sessions and caregiver education to make progress sustainable at home.
For readers, we want you to know that help is out there — and your child doesn’t need to “grow out of it” or struggle alone. At Sensory Savvy Kids, we’re here to partner with you and your child on a journey toward confidence, calm, and meaningful progress.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
At Sensory Savvy Kids, we believe that every child deserves to be seen, understood, and supported — not “fixed.” Sensory differences aren’t something to erase; they’re a part of how a child experiences the world. Our goal is to help each child feel more regulated and confident while honoring their unique way of being.
We also want families to know that we’re here not just for the child, but for you, too. Parenting a child with sensory challenges can feel isolating, overwhelming, and exhausting — and we aim to be a compassionate partner in the process. Whether it’s through hands-on therapy, parent education, or simply being a safe place to ask questions, we’re here to walk this journey with you.
You don’t need a diagnosis to get started, and you don’t need to have it all figured out. If something in your gut tells you your child needs more support, you can trust that instinct — and we’ll meet you where you are.
