Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Crawford.
Hi Sarah, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I decided to become a physical therapist at eight years old, inspired by my experiences as an athlete and a patient. Growing up in an entrepreneurial household, I was exposed to business early on, managing my dad’s company books by my teenage years. I later pursued manual therapy, specializing in an Australian-based approach that aligned with my belief in delivering personalized care. After years of contributing to someone else’s business, I realized the traditional high-volume PT model didn’t fit how I wanted to practice, so I decided to start my own practice, aiming for a more sustainable and tailored approach.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road hasn’t been smooth, with several significant challenges. One of the hardest was having to let go of a close friend from my team, a decision that was difficult on both a professional and personal level. I also faced the challenge of owning my worth, particularly in previous roles where I generated more revenue than the business owners, but was underpaid. These struggles taught me the importance of leadership, self-advocacy, and the uncomfortable—but necessary—decisions that come with growth.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about WAVE Physical Therapy + Pilates?
I own WAVE Physical Therapy + Pilates, where we specialize in manual therapy and focus on providing individualized, high-quality care. Unlike high-volume clinics, we prioritize time with each patient to ensure they receive the attention they need. Additionally, I founded Anchor Wellness Center, a collaborative space that supports independent health and wellness providers. What sets us apart is our commitment to sustainability—both for our patients and our providers. I’m proud of building a business that emphasizes quality care, strong systems, and a supportive community.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is the value of embracing discomfort as part of growth. Every significant change I’ve made—whether restructuring my business, stepping back from patient care, or making difficult team decisions—has involved discomfort, but each time it’s led to stronger outcomes. I’ve learned to accept that disruption is often necessary for meaningful change and that pushing through the discomfort ultimately yields positive results.
