Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicale English.
Hi Nicale, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I started Callie’s Candles in December 2019, as a hobby and small business while out on medical leave. I injured myself while working a second job. I needed to make up for the loss of income. I started researching candle making and became intrigued by the process. I remember staying up at 2 am, watching endless Youtube videos, and taking notes. I signed into my Amazon account and ordered candle-making supplies.
My order arrived the same day. I was so eager to start that I did not pay attention to the wax that I was using. You know, there are a variety of waxes you can purchase. I can honestly say, my first batch was “horrible”. So, I researched some more, I knew that I wanted to make healthy candles, so I started to make a chart of the pros and cons of paraffin, soy, and coconut wax.
As I started to pour and test my candles, I realized how therapeutic candle-making could be. It helped me with my anxiety and the pressures of day-to-day life. I started my little candle business out of my home, selling candles to family, friends, and colleagues. It took off and started something Amazingly Big!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Has it been a smooth road? No, there are going to be bumps along the way. You have to learn how to readjust, pivot, and sometimes take a step back. Everything in life has a process, you cannot just jump to the result. As stated earlier, my first batch of candles was horrible! I had to take a step back because along the way I missed a step in the process. I could have given up on my first batch, second batch, or third batch… but I did not.
Each batch I learned to perfect my craft, and I now understand the process of candle making. It’s science! I finally made it off that bumpy road, lol! My current obstacle is Marketing and Social Media. In a world of Full-time Content Creators, I feel as though I’m struggling in that department. I do know that in time I will turn the corner on that bumpy road, but for now, I’m just enjoying the ride and picking up ideas and experiences along the way!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
We specialize in clean-burning, non-toxic, and highly fragrant candles. What sets us apart? Callie’s Candles love to educate our clients about the different options of candles. We host candle-making classes, workshops, and private parties, where we discuss the pros and cons of waxes that are used in candles.
Not only do we educate our clients about the candle-making process, but we also offer a creative space where they can create their very own custom candles and bond with one another. My goal for 2023 is to volunteer my time to women’s shelters and offer candle-making workshops and classes. Candle-making is so therapeutic in many ways and I would love to share the experience with the community.
I am most proud of opening my candle studio. I started my business in a small corner of my dining room and I never imagined having a creative space. My studio was one of my biggest goals on the list. Callie’s Candle studio will allow me more creative space to bring my ideas to light!
What matters most to you?
Living in your purpose, and family and helping others is what matters the most to me! Once you find your purpose in life, it unlocks unlimited opportunities and helps you learn and love yourself more. Learning and loving who you are help build better relationships with yourself, family, and friends. It’s a process, lol!
Helping and having grace for others is also the most important thing to me. I believe we were put on this earth to help one another. Helping could be a simple act of kindness. A simple smile, hello or surprise someone with a candle could change someone’s day.
