Meet Mike Cairns of Infinite Impact

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mike Cairns.

Hi Mike, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
As a teenager, I used to make fun home videos with my brothers, which turned into a dream of doing something like that professionally one day. In 2008, I founded the company as a means to fulfill that dream. I continued to work my day job and build the company on the side, providing a fairly unfocused range of service offerings to see what would stick (web design, illustration, animation, video production). Around 2012, I came across the first video I’d ever seen a drone be used in. It blew me away. I wasn’t sure what we would use it for just yet, but I knew I had to have it. One day, when after picking up some parts for it, I noticed a construction site nearby. As I have a degree in Building Construction, I decided to pop into the job trailer and see if they’d be interested in aerial drone photography to document their site. Sure enough, they were. That first job led to many others, allowing me to go full-time on the company in 2013. We are now very focused on development media which includes construction, real estate, and architectural clients.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely a lot of bumps in the road. The first few years were tough and stressful. Many, many late nights or near all-nighters in those early years. Only in the last few years have the crazy late nights or long hours eased up a bit, though they still crop up now and again. But when you love what you do, it doesn’t feel like work. That said, it has been a critical life lesson to learn how to better balance work with being a husband and father and ensuring work comes last in that lineup.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We create engaging content for clients with a focus on drone-based media and unique tech solutions like 360 media. Sometimes this takes the form of marketing videos or photos, other times it may be interactive 360 experiences.

I feel like the personal service, quick response, and outside-the-box solutions we create for our clients keeps them coming back to us.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love the general friendliness of Columbus, how fast it’s growing, and that it is really making a name for itself in the country as a hub of innovation.
