Today we’d like to introduce you to Mickel Dennison.
Hi Mickel, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started this journey from the loss of my mother. I was like everyone else working a 9 to 5. So while processing the loss I realized I had a lot on my plate with her home, her belongings and also trying to maintain my life as well. I was completely shattered and overwhelmed. So I did what all people do, start scrolling the internet looking for help. All there were was junk removal companies one after another with no care to what the items meant to my mom or our family not to mention it all goes to a land fill using them. That wasn’t what I wanted. So I called other places like antique shops to see if they may want to come look. They wanted me to bring it all in which was another problem and not a solution. So, I thought if anyone will love my mom’s items and also process them as they should be it would be me. So I took weekend after weekend for what ended up 8 months to a year to go through every item. As I was doing this i actually got to spend a lot of time with my mom spiritually while processing her items. In the months I worked there I was able to call around and find other people and companies that did true donations to families in need and homeless shelters. Some I still work with to this day. I thought my mom would have loved that all her items were given to people that would love them again. Then a lightbulb went off and I thought I could do this and help other families going through the same loss I did in the same way I’m doing for my mom. So today we are Dennison Estate Clean Out where we donate to foster families, family shelters, homeless shelters and we even have a list of items for different families needing beds, dressers etc. so when we find them along the way we can get the much needed items to them. We have now added recycling so even less makes it to a land fill. I’m very proud of what we have been able to accomplish in a relatively short period of time and by helping every family I honor and spend time with my mother.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Absolutely not a smooth road, I had no idea how to run a business, marketing, websites I mean nothing (chuckles) besides the technical side of the business we run into obstacles every day like every other business I’m sure. I have found if you just keep going and putting one foot in front of the other and deal with just the problem at hand it all works out in the end. I just had to figure out the next step and keep going. It can get overwhelming if you look at the entire scope.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
We honestly care about every customer we work with. We process every item in the home and we also alert home owners if we find anything we think is either sentimental or valuable. We re-home not dispose of most items. We unfortunately do have items that will be disposed of for reason like we have been cut off of donations for the day because we donate a lot! For the second reason if the items are broken or in to bad of shape. I’d say about 15% of the home will actually make it to the land fill on an average. You hand us the keys to a difficult situation and I hand you the keys to a move in ready home. Oh we also now offer move in ready cleaning as well. You can find some before and afters on our TikTok
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I was happy go luck sports driven momma boy. I didn’t have a father growing up although I did see him form time to time it was only me my two brothers and my mom.
