Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Kunz.
Michael , we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’m a filmmaker, cinematographer, and Editor with numerous projects to my name —three of which are rolling out this year. Recently, as director of photography and editor on The House of Crow: Legend of the Melon Heads, I earned a Channel 19 interview, guided its local theater run to three sold-out shows, and helped build its grassroots buzz. Most recently, my film Meat premiered at Cleveland’s Capitol Theatre to a sold-out crowd and received shout-outs in Scene Magazine and on Fox 8.
My journey began summers in Los Angeles, shooting scrappy student films with friends. After moving there full-time, I committed wholeheartedly to the craft, and by chance ended up in Ohio where I have been making movies ever since. I also teach Camera and Editing at the Ohio Media School, as well as I am the editor of WOVU’s The Kray List.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I’ve nearly been burned alive, arrested, you name it. A lot of indie film making involves doing really stupid stunts until you have the resources or wisdom to smarten up.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m most known for my work as Director of Photography and my editing. Currently we’re receiving rave reviews for my most recently released film, Meat, a queer slasher that represents the LGBT+ community. I have won awards at festivals such as Hollywood Blood Festival, Indie X, and The People’s film Festival to name a few.
What were you like growing up?
I was a bit of a hellion. My poor mother. My father died when I was 7 and he left us in rather bad straits. Fortunately my mother managed to rebuild our lives, but the associated trauma and patterning some of my father’s anger made my life more difficult than I needed it to be.
