Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Wisniewski.
Hi Matthew, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was working for a private practice that I thought was going to be my job until I retired. Unfortunately, toxicity took over the work place and the owner decided to abruptly close the business. I had a great relationship with the owner and he told me that we would start a new practice that would be the two of us and only two other members of the previous practice. Complications continued and the practice never got off the ground. I started looking for positions at other practices and no one would hire me. The last meeting I had with a practice owner solidified my decison to go out on my own as he bluntly asked “Why don’t you just start your own practice?” At that point, I took all the things I learned from my last boss and started the process of opening MW Counseling LLC. I have been doing that ever since.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely been a challenge. Trying to figure out all the legal avenues and what I need for compliance was very vague. I was using a legal support company whose software would mention various things that are required, only to learn Ohio does not require such things after speaking with a lawyer. I called City Hall to ask about what type of permit I would need and the lady told me “I’m not sure you can do this.” After disucssion, they got back to me and gave me permission to proceed. When I went to City Hall to deliver my permit, I was met with the same questioning if I was able to get my permit. After waiting, again, for a deliberation, I got my permit approved.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
MW Counseling LLC offers virtual counseling to adults across The State of Ohio. I work with the courts, helping clients who are mandated to seek counseling receive the treatment required to stay compliant with probation. I specialze in anger management, anxiety, and relationship issues. What sets us apart from others is that I am your sole contact throughout treatment. When it comes to scheduling, billing, and treatment, I am the only person you need to contact. I am most proud of providing services for an underserved population: court mandated clients. Many counselors do not want to work with this population and one clinician told me that he does not want to work with them because he would have to communicate with the probation officers (it only requires a monthly email that takes five minutes to write, unless a client is noncompliant). I would like people to know that I take a relatable approach to my sessions. When working with populations like the court mandated clients, they do not want to be there and I am not going to pretend they do. I take the time to let them warm to me. I, also, let them dictate the session because, even though they have to be there, it is still their time to discuss what they want.
What matters most to you? Why?
Genuiness. I value genuiness in my perosnal life and I want it to also reflect in my professional life. I get very uncomfortable around the fake people in this world and counseling should be the most real thing you experince. I recently had a client express appreciation for the way I act as my genuine self during sessions. I work from a person-centered therpeutic approach and one of the core conditions of that modality is congrucence, which is just another way of saying genuineness.
