Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Wiggins.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
If you look at my journey from the outside, it may seem like I’ve worn a lot of different hats: speaker, coach, trainer, magazine publisher, podcaster, nonprofit executive, entrepreneur, and owner of M. Wayne Designs. But at the center of all of it has been one mission: helping people move from where they are to where they are capable of being.
My story began long before there was a business card, a podcast, or a company logo. It started with a love for people, leadership, and communication. As a young man growing up in Cleveland, Ohio, I learned early that success was not something you stumbled into. It was built through effort, resilience, relationships, and a willingness to keep moving forward even when the path wasn’t clear.
Sports played a major role in shaping my mindset. As an athlete and team leader, I learned lessons about discipline, accountability, and teamwork that would later become the foundation of my speaking and coaching philosophy. Those experiences taught me that talent may open a door, but character and consistency are what keep it open.
More than thirty years ago, I began speaking in churches, youth programs, community events, and men’s conferences. I didn’t know it at the time, but those early opportunities were preparing me for a career centered around helping others discover their voice, their purpose, and their potential. Over the years, I have had the opportunity to deliver hundreds of presentations and workshops, working with organizations, schools, nonprofits, businesses, and leadership teams across the country.
As my speaking career grew, so did my passion for training and development. I became fascinated with the idea that communication could change lives. Whether I was working with young people, emerging leaders, entrepreneurs, or executives, I saw the same challenge repeated over and over again: people often know what they want to do, but struggle to communicate it clearly and confidently. That realization eventually led me to create coaching and training programs focused on leadership, personal growth, and strategic communication.
At the same time, I was building a career in organizational leadership. Today, I serve as the Executive Director of a nonprofit organization supporting employee engagement, wellness, and community-building initiatives. That role has allowed me to combine my passion for leadership, operations, customer experience, and people development while making a meaningful impact behind the scenes.
Entrepreneurship became another chapter of my journey. What started as creative ideas and side projects eventually evolved into M. Wayne Designs, a licensed merchandise company serving members of historically Black Greek-letter organizations. Through custom products, challenge coins, apparel, and specialty gifts, I’ve been able to blend creativity, storytelling, and community impact into a growing business. What I enjoy most is that every product tells a story and helps celebrate heritage, achievement, and connection.
Along the way, I launched Off the Bench Magazine and the Off the Bench with Mark Wiggins Podcast. Both platforms were created from a simple belief: there are extraordinary people doing incredible things every day, and their stories deserve to be told. Through interviews, articles, and conversations, I’ve had the opportunity to highlight entrepreneurs, leaders, authors, coaches, and changemakers who inspire others to take action.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that success is rarely a straight line. There have been setbacks, disappointments, detours, and moments when plans didn’t unfold the way I expected. But every challenge taught me something valuable. I’ve learned that growth requires adaptability. Leadership requires service. And purpose requires persistence.
Today, as I approach a new season of life and leadership, I find myself focused on legacy. I’m investing more energy into coaching, speaking, teaching, and helping others package their knowledge, tell their stories, and create meaningful impact. Through my C.O.R.E. Elevation System and other coaching programs, I help individuals and organizations communicate with clarity, confidence, and purpose.
If there is one theme that connects every chapter of my journey, it is this: I believe every person has gifts, experiences, and wisdom that deserve to be shared. My life’s work has been helping people get off the bench and into the game, whether that game is business, leadership, service, or personal growth.
The journey continues, but the mission remains the same: serve people, create impact, and leave things better than I found them. That’s the story I’m still writing today.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Absolutely not. While I’m grateful for where I am today, the road has been filled with challenges, setbacks, and moments of uncertainty.
Like many entrepreneurs, I’ve spent years balancing multiple responsibilities at the same time. I’ve built businesses while maintaining a full-time leadership career, raised a family, served my community, and pursued opportunities that often required long hours and significant personal sacrifice. There were times when resources were limited, ideas didn’t work out as planned, and projects took much longer to succeed than expected.
One of the biggest challenges has been learning how to pivot. I’ve experienced business ventures that didn’t produce the results I envisioned, speaking opportunities that didn’t materialize, and partnerships that ultimately weren’t the right fit. Those moments can be discouraging, but they taught me resilience and reinforced the importance of adapting rather than quitting.
Another struggle has been overcoming the tendency to carry everything myself. As a leader and entrepreneur, it’s easy to believe you have to solve every problem, wear every hat, and push through every obstacle alone. Over time, I’ve learned the value of building strong relationships, asking for help, and surrounding myself with people who challenge and support me.
Perhaps the most important lesson is that success is rarely about avoiding failure. It’s about continuing to move forward despite it. Every setback has provided a lesson, every obstacle has strengthened my character, and every challenge has helped shape the person and leader I am today.
Looking back, I wouldn’t describe my journey as smooth. I would describe it as meaningful. The struggles didn’t stop the journey; they became part of the preparation for the work I’m called to do today.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Xtreme Effort Speaking & Consulting, LLC was founded on a simple belief: success is not an accident. It is the result of intentional action, consistent effort, and a commitment to growth. My mission is to help individuals, teams, and organizations unlock their potential, strengthen their leadership, and communicate their value with confidence.
At its core, Xtreme Effort is a leadership development, speaking, coaching, and training company. We specialize in keynote presentations, leadership workshops, communication training, personal development programs, and speaker coaching. Our clients range from entrepreneurs and emerging leaders to nonprofit organizations, corporations, schools, and professional associations.
One of our signature offerings is the C.O.R.E. Elevation System, a coaching and training framework that helps individuals identify their message, clarify their purpose, and confidently communicate their expertise. Whether someone is preparing for a stage, a boardroom presentation, a podcast interview, or simply wants to become a more effective leader, we help them develop the tools and confidence to show up at their best.
What sets Xtreme Effort apart is that our work is built on real-world experience. I don’t teach leadership from theory alone. My background spans more than three decades of speaking, training, organizational leadership, team development, and entrepreneurship. Everything we teach has been tested through practical application in businesses, nonprofits, community organizations, and leadership environments.
We are also known for our “Get Off the Bench” philosophy. Too many talented people spend years waiting for permission, the perfect opportunity, or the perfect time. We challenge people to move from thinking to action, from potential to performance, and from the sidelines into the game.
What I’m most proud of is the impact. While awards and accomplishments are appreciated, the greatest reward comes from seeing clients gain confidence, launch businesses, secure speaking opportunities, grow as leaders, and create lasting change in their organizations and communities.
Ultimately, Xtreme Effort Speaking & Consulting is more than a business. It is a platform dedicated to helping people discover their voice, maximize their gifts, and lead with purpose. If readers remember one thing about our brand, I hope it is this: your success doesn’t need a co-signer. With the right mindset, strategy, and effort, you already have what it takes to move forward.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
**What do you like best about our city? What do you like least about our city?**
Cleveland will always be home. It’s where I grew up, where many of my values were shaped, and where I learned the importance of community, hard work, and resilience. What I appreciate most about Cleveland is its ability to reinvent itself while still honoring its history.
One of the things I love most is the city’s incredible cultural scene. Cleveland is home to world-class institutions like the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Great Lakes Science Center, and the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. These venues bring together history, education, music, and creativity in a way that few cities can.
I’ve also enjoyed watching the revitalization of downtown Cleveland over the years. Areas that were once overlooked have become vibrant destinations filled with restaurants, entertainment, public spaces, and new development. The city’s music scene continues to thrive through venues like House of Blues Cleveland, Playhouse Square, and the many local stages that showcase both emerging and established talent.
Another thing that makes Cleveland special is its diversity. The city is a blend of cultures, neighborhoods, traditions, and perspectives. From ethnic festivals and family-owned restaurants to generations of immigrants who helped build the city, Cleveland’s cultural richness is one of its greatest strengths.
Now for what I like least. As a lifelong Cleveland sports fan, I would love to see more consistency from our professional teams. Cleveland fans are among the most loyal and passionate in the country, and we’ve weathered our share of ups and downs. While we’ve celebrated some incredible moments, sustained winning seasons have often felt just out of reach.
And if I’m being completely honest, I’m not thrilled about the Browns actually leaving downtown. The team has always been part of the city’s identity and game-day atmosphere along the lakefront. Moving away from downtown feels like losing a piece of the Cleveland experience. For many fans, myself included, that’s definitely a “No Bueno” moment.
At the end of the day, though, Cleveland’s heart is its people. It’s a city that works hard, fights through challenges, and keeps showing up. That’s what I’ve always loved most about it.
