Meet Kierra Cotton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kierra Cotton.

Hi Kierra, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey with media began in high school (VASJ). I was a senior and like so many others, I was struggling with what was next. Thankfully, I had an English teacher who poured into me and helped me understand how I could translate my skillset and talents into a career. She suggested I pursue broadcast journalism. Taking her suggestion, I did my research and decided it was what I wanted to do. From there, I attend the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University, graduating in 2016.

After returning home, I began my professional career at WKYC-Channel 3 as an audience engagement specialist. After three short months, I was promoted to Digital Content Producer. I stayed in that role until 2020 when I began my focused on-air contributions. In 2022, I accepted a full-time on-air position, which is my current role. In late 2021, I accepted an in-game hosting position with the Cleveland Cavaliers organization. I am currently enjoying my second season with the team!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It has not been a smooth journey. Because I took a non-traditional route to on-air reporting and hosting, I often struggled with comparing my journey to others. But as cliché, as it sounds, the comparison is the thief of joy. So I had to learn to stay focused on myself and celebrate my wins no matter how small or big they were.

I’m also a type-a personality, so I’ve struggled with not having everything planned out and not knowing exactly what’s next for my career, but that is the nature of the business. Despite the challenges, I will say I’ve enjoyed the ride thus far and look forward to everything that is ahead for me.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My official title is a multi-platform reporter and host. My focuses are people profiles, new businesses, and just unique stories that you don’t hear every day. I think what sets me apart from others, outside of the fact that I’m working in my hometown, is my authenticity.

Growing up I always felt that anchors and reporters were so aloof and unapproachable, so in my professional career, I focus on allowing people to see me in my element, being myself, doing ordinary tasks, and making them feel as welcome and warm as possible when they meet me!

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I believe my personality is the biggest asset to my success. I pride myself on being able to connect with people from all walks of life.
