Today we’d like to introduce you to Kate Troyer.
Kate, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
While I feel that this is something I’ve been accidentally practicing most of my life. I guess it all started about 5 years ago. I had been in various sales positions throughout my twenties and was feeling extremely uninspired. I started asking myself, “If you could do anything, what would be?” For months, nothing came to me and I began to grow frustrated.
One day, listening to a podcast, I heard someone mention that if you were having a difficult time figuring out what to pursue in life, ask yourself what seven or eight-year-old you wanted. I immediately laughed as my seven-year-old dream was to be Martha Stewart. When that thought wouldn’t go away, I decided to see in what way, I could practically apply a dream like that to my current circumstance.
At that time, I decided on home staging, and Homeslice Living was born. I found success fairly quickly and added a design element to my business as well. But after a couple of years, I had that unfulfilling feeling creep back in. Surely, this couldn’t be the case, I was living out my dream, right?
After a few very synchronistic months, events, and finally a short girls’ trip to St. Petersburg, Fl. Feng Shui fell right into my lap when I found an old Feng Shui manual I had bought and printed and bonded years ago. Upon finding this manual tucked away in a closet, I also found a note in it, in my handwriting, that said, “teach this”. Saying I was confused, would have been an understatement but, I took it as a sign and I went with it. I ended up purchasing as many Feng Shui books as I could get my hands on later that day.
After reading a chapter in one book (The Western Guide to Feng Shui) by Terah Katherine Collins, I was HOOKED! I was also extremely drawn to Terah and when trying to find videos and whatever content I could from her, I saw that she didn’t have youtube videos, she had her school. I ended up removing the home staging aspect of my business after that trip and went all in on soaking up as much knowledge as I could about Feng Shui while I attended school.
While adding Feng Shui as another aspect of my design practice locally, I also noticed a large gap in other people being able to connect with the concept of it. I know so many that are obsessed with HGTV and any home show they can get their hands on and “wellness” in general, is a big practice right now. So why did so many people I talked with about it, not connect with it at all?
What I saw was that people had no frame of reference for it, their brains couldn’t connect and so they didn’t either. It came off intimidating. Seeing this gave me so much clarity and I decided that demystifying Feng Shui and making it an easily accessible practice was my purpose. And I haven’t looked back since.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Hahaha, not. After getting my home staging company off the ground and making it successful, it was hard to knowingly start from almost ground zero again.
I also didn’t anticipate that so many people would have no idea what Feng Shui was, which meant, I had to build up my audience all over again as well. It still isn’t easy but, it’s so worth it. I truly believe so much in what I do and see so much value in this practice. I know if I keep going, Home Wellness is going to be just as popular as going to the gym.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Homeslice Living?
I created an online community this year to be a resource for anyone interested in Feng Shui or what you may also hear me refer to as, Home Wellness. It’s free to join and it’s awesome to connect with other ‘home nerds’, like myself. That’s where I’ll be putting in a lot of energy this year. In creating resources. I think what we do differently from many other Feng Shui practitioners and even other interior stylists or designers is that we come from a place of helping you connect with YOU!
Defining how your space serves you, how it makes you feel. How it can be set up to bring you more powerful opportunities and manifestations. But also, how we need to look inward first, because home and an amazing lifestyle are truly created, from the inside out. We apply that to all of our services, whether it’s in person when teaching at a workshop, or within our community.
