Meet Kara Groff of Groff Family Services

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kara Groff.

Hi Kara, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was born into entrepreneurship on both sides of my family. My mom’s family ran Strickfaden’s Nursery and a year-round Christmas store, while my dad’s side was rooted in the funeral business. My grandfather, F. Leo Groff, started in funeral service, and my father, Leon J. Groff, expanded the business and all of its brands. I had the privilege of working alongside him for nearly ten years, and together we launched Groff Pet Loss Services in 2010 and The Legacy Center in 2014, both aimed at helping families mark meaningful moments with care and intention.

Today, our family business includes Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory with Sandusky and Milan Chapels, The Remembrance Center and Gift Gallery, and in 2023, I renovated our Huron Chapel and rebranded it as Meadow Green Funeral Home and Cemetery to create a stronger connection with Meadow Green Memorial Park, the cemetery at its entrance.

In 2023, I also reimagined the business under Groff Family Services, uniting all our brands under one mission: to celebrate all of life’s occasions. That evolution eventually led to Work Space, which officially opened in the fall of 2025. Work Space is about collaboration, connection, and honoring the relationships built during our working years — celebrating another chapter of life with intention and community.

Every step of my journey has been shaped by family, legacy, and the people we serve, and I’m proud to carry that forward while continuing to innovate and expand the ways we support our community.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The sudden death of my father was a true game changer. It thrust me into areas I wasn’t familiar with, from learning the art of negotiation for property and vehicle purchases to stepping in as project manager on renovation projects. Balancing multiple businesses at once, without a strong advisory team in place, was another challenge, especially while being a single mom of two. But these obstacles became opportunities: I learned more than I ever imagined, built a network of supportive, like-minded business owners, and created a space like Work Space where I can host Think Tanks and Creative Mornings — two monthly series we’ve started in 2026 — to bring people together.

Being a female entrepreneur in a male-dominated industry also pushed me to grow in ways I hadn’t anticipated. I’ve had to assert my voice, prove myself, and find confidence as a leader — lessons I hope resonate for other women. On top of that, there was the internal struggle of giving myself permission to enjoy work while being a mother. Society often frowns upon women prioritizing their careers alongside motherhood, but I’ve embraced both. Showing my kids — especially my daughter — that chasing your dreams is not only possible but positive, has become one of the most rewarding parts of this journey. What started as challenges have truly become lessons in growth, resilience, and creating a life that models ambition and joy for my children.

We’ve been impressed with Groff Family Services, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Groff Family Services is a family-owned group of businesses built around one simple belief: every stage of life deserves to be honored with care, intention, and connection. While we are best known for our funeral homes and crematory, our work extends far beyond end-of-life care. Our brands are designed to support families through all of life’s moments. Loss, yes, but also celebration, growth, remembrance, and community.

Our services include Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory, Meadow Green Funeral Home & Cemetery, Groff Pet Loss Services, The Remembrance Center, The Legacy Center, and Work Space, our coworking and collaboration hub. Together, they form an ecosystem that allows people to gather, grieve, celebrate, create, and connect — all under one umbrella, with one consistent standard of service.

What sets us apart is our ability to blend tradition with innovation. With deep roots in a multigenerational family business, we respect legacy while continually evolving to meet modern needs. Whether it’s offering personalized memorial experiences, pet loss support, community events, or creating a space where professionals and entrepreneurs can build meaningful working relationships, we lead with empathy and forward thinking.

Brand-wise, I am most proud of the trust we’ve earned. Families invite us into their most vulnerable moments, and they return to us for life’s celebrations — that says everything. Our brand is known for warmth, authenticity, and a genuine commitment to people. We don’t believe in transactional relationships; we believe in long-term connections.

What I want readers to know is that Groff Family Services is more than a collection of businesses — it’s a mission. We are here to serve our community with heart, to create spaces where people feel supported, and to celebrate all of life’s milestones with purpose and care.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Resilience.

Being able to adapt, stay grounded, and keep moving forward — especially during loss, uncertainty, or change — has been essential to my success. Resilience has allowed me to honor the legacy built before me while still having the courage to evolve, take risks, and lead with purpose. It’s not about never stumbling: It’s about learning, adjusting, and showing up again with clarity and heart.
