Today we’d like to introduce you to Juile Domicone.
Hi Juile, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
The idea for Jubie’s originated around a kitchen table one night between myself and my parents, Fred & Stacey. It was 2011, and they had recently purchased an abandoned building on the corner of Dayton Yellow Springs Rd. and Kauffman Ave. for next to nothing. Their original plan was to fix up the building and rent it out as retail/commercial space. Then I entered the conversation.
When the original location for Jubie’s was purchased, I was a junior in high school at the time. I knew I wanted to go into business at Ohio State, but I wasn’t 100% sure how I was going to make my entrepreneurial dreams come true. I grew up watching my dad as a small business owner, and my mom climb the corporate ladder. I loved the idea of being my own boss and creating something of my own. The three of us put our heads together that night and realized that we could create something really special. Something that Fairborn needed. Something that the community could all get behind and be proud of. That something was Jubie’s.
I worked at an ice cream shop all through high school and loved it. Not only that, but my dad used to come home from a hard day of printing and joke that it would be so much easier with ice cream. Once we realized that Fairborn didn’t really have much of an ice cream presence and zero options for quality homemade ice cream, we knew what we were going to put in that building.
This decision was the start of 7 years of research, classes, conventions, talking with experts, graduating from scoop school, and everything else in between. I graduated from The Ohio State University in the spring of 2017, and we immediately went to work on the building. About a year and a half later, Jubie’s first opened its doors on July 3rd, 2018. We’ve been proudly serving the Fairborn and greater Dayton community with the best ice cream ever made and plan to expand Jubie’s into many different communities throughout Ohio and the Mid-West!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As any small business owner would tell you – it’s not easy. When we first opened our doors, we had no idea the kind of response we were about to receive. We completely ran out of ice cream in two days and were severely understaffed for the first few weeks. A good problem to have, but a hectic problem nonetheless. We spent the first few months working day and night hiring, training, and creating processes that would help keep the business as consistent as possible and keep us from collapsing from exhaustion. We were lucky enough to hire people that cared about Jubie’s almost as deeply as we did and wanted it to be as successful as possible. Since then, we’ve been able to weather whatever has been thrown our way. With the help of an amazing management team, we’ve not only survived a global pandemic, labor crisis, and supply shortage (just to name a few), but we thrived in them.
Today, we continue to deal with day-to-day headaches and growing pains just like any other small business. What we’ve found is that if we stay true to our values, enforce our mantra, and celebrate our people, then we’re going to make it. We would not be where we are today without our incredible team and amazing fans, and cannot thank them enough for that.
As you know, we’re big fans of Jubie’s Creamery. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about the brand?
Jubie’s Creamery is dedicated to striving for the highest quality possible in everything we do. This includes everything from the products we serve to the people who serve them. In order to achieve this, we create our hand-dipped ice cream one small batch at a time to provide unique, always-fresh creations. Our menu is designed to fulfill even the wildest of ice cream dreams with a variety of crowd favorites, specialty flavors, soft serve custard creations and many other tasty treats.
We’re most known for our variety of flavors of our premium hand-dipped ice cream. We carry everything from classics like cookie dough, caramel brownie, and buckeye to unique creations like any of our rotating “Junk from the Trunk” flavors. We’re most proud of our Choc-A-Lot flavor as it partners with a Dayton brand known all over the country – Esther Price – and is the most recent winner of Best New Flavor of the Midwest from the North American Ice Cream Association.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
Jubie’s would not be here today without my parents by my side. Our partnership is incredibly strong, and we make every single decision together – no matter how big or how small. We recognize the value and perspective that each of us brings to the table, and we each play to our strengths when it comes to running Jubie’s. I’ve learned a lot on my journey as a small business owner and manager, and I’m incredibly lucky to have such great mentors to help guide me.
Jubie’s would also not be here without our management team – both for our stores and our kitchen. Their love for our brand and dedication to their work is incredible and something you don’t see very often these days. We are incredibly lucky to have such a strong team and foundation to grow on.
