Hi Joanne, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Proactive Risk solutions LLC was initially named SmBiz Consulting LLC which was created as the result of my publication “Risk Management and Key performance Indicators”. The book outlines the risk approach I developed whereby organizations utilize key performance indicators to monitor and identify risks. This allows functional management the ability to have a hands-on risk management approach. With the proper alignment of risks and KPI’s, management can also perform a more thorough root cause analysis which then results in more appropriate long-term resolutions.
The impetus behind the consulting/advisory service was the risk approach I developed as well as my 20+ years of experience in operational risk management. I expanded my scope from the financial sector to the manufacturing sector. In addition to the publication, I have written several articles published in my website as well as LinkedIn. My experience in Economic research has given me a good background for researching topics and issues that are relevant to the current business environment.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The most significant struggle has been getting organizations to pay attention to the importance of risk management. The company has tried to gain interest through primarily LinkedIn. We are seeing some interest bubble up but no actual clients.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As previously stated I have gained expertise in operational risk management. Initially through the development of a risk assessment framework for a regional bank. Recognizing the changing business environment and with knowledge of traditional risk management, I set out to develop a more proactive, resource and budget friendly approach to risk. This approach relies on alignment of risks with appropriate key performance indicators. Understanding that in the financial sector, regulatory risk are crucial, I turned toward private business sectors such as manufacturing. In addition to developing a risk assessment framework, I was a major participant in the development of the accompanying GRC application.
Other areas in my professional career included working in economic research as an assistant to economist, project management for a renovation and operational supervisor. In addition to these I have earned an MBA from Case Western Reserve University, Weatherhead School of Management.
My most significant achievements would be: the publication, development of the risk assessment framework, and earning an MBA.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The importance of flexibility.
