Today we’d like to introduce you to Jill Koch.
Hi Jill, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I graduated college with a degree in Broadcast Journalism and spent two years after college in Eureka, CA working for a television station as a reporter/anchor. Once my contract was up I moved to Ohio (my husband is from here and we met in CA) and felt a pull to do something different. I dabbled in a little party planning and then decided to go back to school for nursing. After graduation from nursing school, I worked at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital just shy of 3 years, around which time I had our son. After that, I decided to stay home but found myself looking for a creative outlet. I had always loved reading blogs and my journalism side enjoyed writing so I decided to start my blog in 2018 and that led to me slowly doing more and more on social media. I quickly realized that the news reporter in me never really left and I loved opportunities to share and engage with people. I’ve also always had a love for cleaning and organizing so naturally, I just started sharing tips and tricks I used around the home with those watching online, hoping it could help someone else out there too. As video started to take off on social media I decided to dust off my editing skills from my reporter days and try my hand at some Reels and TikToks. As I did I realized how much I really loved and missed content creation and getting to be creative each day. That has all really led to where I am today and my presence online. I love getting to do this each day and getting to interact with so many great people and hear their stories or help answer their cleaning and organizing questions. It’s been such a fun journey and has really given me that creative outlet I was craving.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I think my biggest struggle was figuring out who I was and what I brought to the table. It’s easy to watch so many other people online and feel like you have to do what everyone else is doing. It took me a few years to really narrow in on what it was I enjoyed sharing and how I wanted to show up online. Once I got clear on that it all became a lot easier and I didn’t feel pulled in as many directions as a I did when I was trying to be someone else. It’s also something that not a lot of my close friends or family do so there were times when I would have questions or just want to pick someone else’s brain and felt isolated. Building community and getting a good group of friends who are also in this line of work, who I can ask questions, has definitely been helpful.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I still struggle with what to tell people I do! I would say I am a content creator who specializes in cleaning and organizing and general help around the home. I love sharing easy tips and tricks for keeping a home. I want to help people create a space they feel good in but not have to spend hours upon hours keeping it clean and together. I like to provide practical solutions that anyone can do and that are realistic for everyday life. I also love to share a good life hack because I’m all about an easier way to do something, and I enjoy sharing useful products I find that I think everyone should know about. I also love sharing clean living tips and helping others better understand the ingredients in our everyday household items. I’m a firm believer that you don’t need harsh chemicals for routine cleaning or the majority of our daily products, so I share safer alternatives when I can. I hope I’m known for all of those things 🙂 I’m probably also known for my love of the color pink. I’m most proud of my hard work and consistency and although I still have lots of content in mind to share going forward I’m proud of all I’ve created so far. I think what sets me apart from others, as cliche as it sounds, is my personality and just being me. It’s easy to develop a bit of imposter syndrome some days but I remind myself that while the content won’t always be brand new, my version or spin on it will be.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
This is why it’s probably a good thing I was never an actress or singer who accepts an award because my list of people to thank would be a mile long. They’d definitely be cuing the music to wrap it up. There are so many people who have contributed to where I am today, many in so many small ways that have added up, that they probably don’t even know it. I have a great support system in my family and friends. They might not fully understand what I do but they try or offer advice and encouragement any way they can. My husband has definitely been so supportive and my biggest cheerleader. I could come up with the craziest idea and if he saw that it was something I really believed in, he’d support it. I have two friends Alison and Amanda who I talk to every day. We are always bouncing ideas off of each other and they are constantly giving me great advice. They are truly two people who really helped me get focused on what I wanted my brand to look like and they are always keeping me in check when I start to veer off course. And I have a core group of local content creator friends who have also been so wonderful in helping me navigate this path.
