Today we’d like to introduce you to Jill Basler.
Hi Jill, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was working in a job that I wanted to retire from when I was downsized. So I decided to start my own organizing company. I had done organizing for friends and family for many years, but hadn’t thought about doing that officially. So in 2017, I started my company, Just Be Organized LLC. It was the best decision because it fueled my passion to help people achieve a clutter-free home or office and give them systems that they could maintain.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has absolutely not been smooth! Owning your own company is not for the faint of heart. It is HARD WORK! I love working with people and getting them decluttered and organized. But, that is only one part of it. In the beginning, I had to wear all the hats: CEO, marketer, bookkeeping, HR, training, acquisitions, website, etc. I found I am not good at all those hats. So, I have offloaded some of those tasks to people who are better than me. This is has helped me focus on what truly matters and what I am best at.
I also had to learn boundaries and not let my clients push me around. I had to learn what I am willing to do and not be pushed into something I can’t or won’t do. I have learned about myself as well. I have always been a people pleaser and I have learned to be a bounder keeper.
I have had to “fire” some clients. For a former people pleaser, this was very hard, but a must for my sanity. I also didn’t want to waste their time nor money since they were not ready for the level of support that I offered.
Another struggles is the economy directly affects my business, if consumers are paying higher prices for the things they need, paying to have their home organized will fall to the bottom of their financial priorities.
Lastly is finding ways to stay in the public eye and relevant to what people need and want.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Here is my story. My niche is working with empty nesters because I am an empty nester.
I had all these empty rooms. I raised my babies and now they were on their own, doing what we had trained them to do. Now what to do with this empty house! My ideas were endless, but where to start? First things first, I needed to deal with all the things my kids had left. Why am I their storage space? My vision for these empty rooms is not a free storage facility for my adult children. With a vision in place and a committed date on the calendar, I faced the mountain of memorabilia clutter, leftover uniforms, trophies, knick knacks, certificates, etc. After sorting, purging, collecting, and organizing I found the floor; I don’t remember that carpet! Four containers bought and each kid received their own collection of 22 years of memories, and a kiss on the cheek. I communicated they can do what they want with it because it is now in their charge and their possession. How freeing that was for me. I have all the memories in my heart. I didn’t need to keep their stuff.
Our 2nd floor has totally been renovated to fit my husband and my needs for a huge master closet, larger master bedroom, my office and two guest rooms. A refresh into the new empty nester life. The rested nest, we like to call it.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
I have learned that I am good at what I do and I have a gift to offer others.
I also have learned that everyone doesn’t want this gift or they aren’t ready for it so I am rejected by them. They aren’t rejecting me, they are rejecting the new way that I am going to provide.
I can’t meet everyone’s need and everyone is not going to meet mine.
There are enough clientele to go around. Don’t have a scarcity mindset.
Be friendly and personable with my competition. I have set up coffee dates with them and instead of taking clients from me they have sent some my way!
