Meet Jessica Murphy of Jessica Murphy – Health and Life Insurance Broker with HealthMarkets

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Murphy.

Jessica, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I worked in social services prior to my role as a health and life insurance broker. I worked with children and families who were facing multiple different kinds of hardships and struggles. This schedule and work life balance became difficult after 10 years. I decided I needed a change that would allow me to put my family and myself first. That is when I found health and life insurance.

After sitting down with my husband, we decided that the risk of starting a new business from the ground up was going to be more beneficial for us than if I were to maintain in a position that was risking my health and had little room for growth.

Along the way, I have been able to continue many of the same aspects of work that I enjoyed with my previous job. I am able to meet new people and meet them where they are. I can come to their home, meet them in the community, virtually or over the phone. I get to help educate them on their options and help them make a plan to fit what is best for their family and their needs.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The transition from employee to business owner has not been a smooth one. Many late nights of studying after the kids went to bed and while my husband was at work, as well as family flashcard making. There have been nights of worry and tears, stress and uncertainty. Will I be able to grow to a point where my family and business are financially secure? Will I still be able to keep my family a priority while growing my business?

But through all that, I have had a tremendous amount of support as well. My husband has been by my side every step of the way. Encouraging me, keeping my spirits up and putting in extra efforts in the maintaining the house and finances while I work to grow. My kids are always in my cheer sections, motivating me to keep going. My mom is always there by my side to help me run my vendor tables and spread the word about my business. My in-laws helping to watch my children while I am working regularly so that I have the ability to go to networking events, and meet with clients. It has truly taken a village and without my family and friends, I don’t know if I would have made it this far.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Jessica Murphy – Health and Life Insurance Broker with HealthMarkets?
I am a health and life insurance broker. I am appointed with many of the major health insurance companies. This allows me to help individuals and families find coverage that works best for them, not to make them fit into a “cookie cutter” plan.

I work hard to meet people where they are. My goal is to educate individuals, families and small businesses on what insurance is, how it works and what their options are. No one should have to make a decision on their policy without understanding the coverage and what it does. I sit down with my clients to review their medications list, their providers and their pharmacy to help them make an educated decision on the plan that they are most comfortable with.

Whether it is meeting with someone about the coverage for them and their family, meeting with an elderly client’s adult child and helping them understand the needs of their parents and helping them plan for their future, or just helping someone navigate the coverage they already have in place, I hope when someone is done meeting with me, they feel confident in their decisions and comfortable enough to come to me with any questions they may later think of.

I am able to enroll individuals and families into health insurance, Medicare, and life insurance. We can also review supplementary options to help fill the holes that health insurance does cover.

I am also able to help small businesses pick a plan and set up their health insurance for their employee’s as well.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
I have found that networking is an important part in growing my business. I am a member of a referral group that meets weekly and exchange referrals. I have learned a lot from this group. Not only how to support one another with referrals, but also how to be a business owner, how to feel more confident as a business owner and in myself in general, and how important it is to keep showing up and being present.

I am also a board member for my local Chamber of Commerce. This has provided me the opportunity to meet more people in my community and become more involved. I have been able to help organize and set up events, donate time and goods and help support other businesses in my area.
