Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamie Morse.
Hi Jamie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
After graduating from Philadelphia College of Art, I began my painting career in the late 1970’s. I quickly became interested in painting landscapes, particularly “en plein air” – meaning painting outdoors on location in the manner of the French Impressionist artists. I also work from my memory, imagination, and sometimes use photographs as a reference. Over the years, I have painted in New England, Florida, and Northeast Ohio, and other locales around the country. I am interested in depicting specific places at various times of the year, beach scenes in in the summer, and views of the Chagrin Valley, where I currently reside. In recent years I have expanded my art to include painting commissioned wedding paintings live, starting and completing the painting to be unveiled at the reception. My art is always evolving, and I am constantly seeking new places to paint and ideas to express in my work.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Being an artist is always a struggle, with many disappointments and triumphs along the way. I teach art full-time. which enhances my painting career, but also limits the time I have available to work on my art. The early years were difficult to establish myself locally, but thanks to many local art exhibits, and solo shows at various galleries, I have reached a point where I am known and respected in the Cleveland art scene.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am most proud of the variety of work I create. I specialize in landscape painting, and take great pride in constantly experimenting with different approaches, subjects, and techniques. Many artists find a very specific subject or style and don’t deviate from their individual formula, which to me is repetitive. I like to think my varied approach sets me apart in that I am always pushing my art in different directions.
What were you like growing up?
I was a hyper-kinetic kid who couldn’t sit still. I loved sports and was a good athlete, but was not a particularly good student, with the exception of art classes. In my teen years, I was crazy about rock music, played guitar and drums, and relentlessly attended concerts. In my high school years, I was that kid who basically lived in the art studio.
