Today we’d like to introduce you to Harry Acosta.
Hi Harry, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
In 2014, a coworker and friend needed a photographer for coverage he was doing for a band in town. He knew we liked the same music, so he asked me to come along, even though I had no experience. I photographed the performance and started my career as a photographer. Another friend of mine taught me the basics of photography, and I owe her a great deal for that. Eventually, I became an in-house photographer and art director. I was laid off from that position after just buying my first professional camera. I couldn’t find a job designing, so I started my own business. With the exceptions of weddings, I said yes to every project while starting out. With each new experience, came a new challenge, until eventually, I had already developed some solutions for most new obstacles I would encounter. Four years have gone by and I’m seeing more and more business each month. I feel fortunate because there are people who have spent their life with aspirations of becoming a photographer, and here I am, photographing something new every day…
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Of course, there was a period in 2020, where it was illegal for me to do my job… The biggest challenge however has been getting word out about my photography, this year, I’m getting recognized throughout Columbus with a photo installation with the GCAC, and online accolades from peerspace and experttise.com My challenge this year is finding potential candidates to work for me.
We’ve been impressed with Harry Acosta Photography, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I’m a photographer out of Lewis Center with a studio in downtown Columbus. I create traditional and experimental commercial, portrait, and event imagery. I specialize in people and capturing moments that evoke emotion and interest. I didn’t realize when starting out, how much of a people person I had to become. Now, most of my client reviews speak of how great it was to work with me before they even see their photography.
My success is due to putting more effort than most into everything I do. I like to spend candid time with the subject — presenting ideas, interviewing, and taking photos. I can help pose you, but I strive to capture natural reactions from all of my clients, especially those who are camera shy. I also spend extra time with each photo, adjusting detail, color, and blemishes.
Any big plans?
No big changes in the near future. I’m enjoying what I do and I think expanding my business would reduce the quality experience for my clients. I hope to continue doing more creative and different projects around the Columbus area. Maybe the only change would be a different studio space, or creating a new indoor environment specifically for photography that has character and more sophistication.
