Today we’d like to introduce you to Hannah Sensius.
Hi Hannah, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have always been interested in the beauty industry and when I was in high school I wanted to do the post secondary program for Cosmetology, but my parents urged me to go to college instead.
After attending college for three semesters, I decided it wasn’t for me and went to hair school. During my time there, I became fascinated with elaborate editorial and halloween makeup creations. I would spend every day creating multiple makeup looks until my skill set was very diverse.
After graduating hair school, I worked for three years at a high end commission salon. I am eternally grateful for all I learned there, and for all the stylists that taught me what I know and practice today.
Towards the end of my time there, I started getting involved in the NE Ohio creative community. I held networking events and content days for photographers, models, and other hair/makeup artists. I was booking tons of offsite gigs and working on commercial shoots. It only made sense to quit my commission based job and start my own business, Sensible Beauty LLC.
Shortly after I started my business, I was offered the opportunity to work as head of hair and makeup for an indie horror film, Sweetest Day, and have since worked on three horror films (and counting.)
I have been running my business for seven years and have loved every minute of it. Having the freedom to make my own schedule has allowed me to do so many cool things. Its allowed me to travel, make new connections, and broaden my portfolio, resume, and most importantly my skill set.
Never give up on what you are passionate about, it will always work out the way it was meant to.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has definitely not always been a smooth ride.
Cosmetology itself its such a challenging profession, you not only have to perfect your craft, but also deal with peoples emotions. It truly is a big game of trial and error, you have to be willing to fail and grow from your mistakes. That applies to hair, makeup, and running a business.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Sensible Beauty LLC?
For hair and in salon services, I specialize in blonding and color correcting, and fantasy colors.
For makeup, generally outside of the salon, I specialize in editorial and halloween makeup. I also offer glam and wedding makeup. I have done countless weddings in the decade that I have had my license.
I also work offsite for photoshoots (modeling myself or doing hair and makeup for others) and I do a handful of commercial shoots. I love doing all of these amazing things, but I would have to say that working on film sets are my absolute favorite.
I am a very outgoing, bubbly, and empathetic person. Anyone and everyone are welcome in my chair and it will always be a confidential and safe place.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Starting my business was the biggest risk I have taken so far. It was a very scary thought to start it up and immediately fail.
However that is not what happened and I have learned that taking risks, big or small, is an important task in improving your craft and your character.
