Meet Evan Steiner

Today we’d like to introduce you to Evan Steiner.

Evan Steiner

Evan, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I began experimenting with art in high school but focused on poetry during college. Fast forward to 2015, my father passed, and I felt the urge to start painting again. For the past nine years, I’ve painted as a cathartic release and a method to connect with people who are going through similar stories. Music has been a driving factor and a method to understand my clients and their families as I paint, listening to their music for the entire piece. My painting eventually led me to meeting my future wife, a photographer. We followed each other via Instagram and began talking which blossomed into a relationship that led me to relocate from New Jersey to Indiana. Today, my wife and I run an art studio together at the Circle City Industrial Complex and continue to connect with other local artists and art lovers.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
In the beginning, I didn’t really care about results; the motion and emotions that came with my painting were enough. When I started sharing my art with friends and on social media, I began to evaluate my methods and became quite critical of my work. There’s still an ebb and flow on how I view my work, but I try to focus on the moments of creation and the impact my art has for the public and my clients. To say one hasn’t struggled as an artist seems a bit cliché, but I’ve felt more positivity through my art than struggle.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a Technical Account Manager in the SaaS space. I prefer to keep art as a secondary venture, so I’m not dependent on it to survive. Although I’ll surely paint more when I retire, I need time and distance between painting sessions as they’re quite emotional, and I need to recharge. I think my method of listening to a client’s music on repeat is a unique approach that helps me align with their style. I’m known for large-scale abstract art paintings, which are done mostly with acrylic paint but include other media when needed.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I believe people will continue to view art as an investment not only in terms of the physical media & monetary worth but also in the artist due to the personal connections made through the process.
