Meet Erica Hemmelgarn

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erica Hemmelgarn.

Hi Erica, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
I graduated from the Spa School in 2008 with a license in advanced aesthetics. It was around that time that I begun modeling as a hobby and as a way to make extra money. I really loved the makeup aspect of the shoots and getting to be creative. After a few years of doing my own makeup for these things, I had some friends asking me to do their makeup for weddings, modeling jobs, and fashion shows. It made me so happy to be able to be a big part of such a special experience for these beautiful women that I decided that was what I wanted to do. So now I work on the other side of the camera to make my clients look as beautiful on the outside as they are on the inside. I have started my own company BeautE Artistry which is 2 years old now. I am always practicing, improving, and mastering new skills in the makeup world. I also believe my license gives me knowledge to not only apply makeup but understand the skin and clients’ needs further. I specialize in bridal and photography makeup. It is such a fulfilling career choice, and I have never been happier. I believe it’s my purpose to educate as well as glam up my clients. And the sheer joy and happiness it brings my clients makes it all worth it.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Some of the struggles I have faced have been that in Columbus, there are so many other makeup artists out there. Pricing is competitive, and word-of-mouth promotion has been hard as a newer person in the industry. After 2 years this still isn’t my main source of income, but I am hopeful that will turn around soon. I just remind myself to promote and always be growing as an artist.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in bridal and photography makeup. As a model for years, I believe I have an edge in knowing what is required for photography and fashion show makeup. Also, my license in esthetics gives me knowledge to help my clients improve their skin and concerns outside of just makeup application. I am most proud of my bridal makeup because every client has a different vision, and I love how happy the bride and bridal party are when their vision is realized.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
I have taken many courses of sanitation requirements yearly as part of keeping my esthetician license current. Proper sanitation is always so important while working with makeup application. Disposal tools in bulk are something I keep on hand and have at the ready in my makeup kit

Pricing:

  • Bridal makeup for the bride with lashes $140
  • $30 per hour of travel outside a 30-mile radius
  • Photography and other makeup $80 base price depending on desired looks
