Meet Dr. Sam Parkhurst of The Educated Pelvis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Sam Parkhurst.

Hi Dr. Parkhurst, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I fell in love with physical therapy while living in Australia and found my calling in grad school to specialize in Pelvic Health PT. While living overseas, I was pregnant and gave birth to my 2 kids in Copenhagen, Denmark. With universal healthcare, I was fortunate to experience the benefits of in-home care within weeks of delivery. After suffering from many pelvic health dysfunctions,, I knew that the physical therapy field needed more practitioners to specialize in these common and often accepted ailments like leaking urine or feces, urgency, constipation, diastasis recti abdominis, pain with sex, and prolapse. I have opened my own clinic where I meet patients where they are and provide treatment and education to empower them to heal and live the life they desire without dysfunction. My patient population includes adults with vulva and pediatrics.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The largest struggle in my field is that many patients and other healthcare providers do not know that there are treatments for common pelvic dysfunctions. I am moved to educate and talk about these sometimes-embarrassing ailments so that everyone knows where to go to heal and seek treatment.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a Pelvic Health Physical Therapist who treats pelvic and abdominal dysfunctions and pain. There are other wonderful pelvic health therapists around the Columbus area. What sets me apart is that I work with children and offer an in-home treatment 2-3 weeks after delivery to promote healing during the 4th Trimester. 10-20% of elementary school-aged kids suffer from nighttime bedwetting. This dysfunction and constipation and leaking urine with activity is all too common in the pediatric population. I provide treatments to help these kids! Postpartum therapy should be standard practice. I come to you soon after delivery to begin the pelvic floor and abdominal healing process during the 4th trimester.
