Today we’d like to introduce you to David Joseph.
Hi David, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have always loved telling visual stories though my camera for the past 25 years. I wake up early and try to capture everyday locations or objects from a different perspective that people normally expect. I have always done my high-end architectural photography in conjunction with my fine art photography as the two push each other and myself to create better and better images.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I am lucky to have the best clients in the world, who have been incredibly understanding. It seems I have needed to reinvent what I do every 10 years due to economic downturns, but that is a small price to keep doing what I love. Moving back to Cleveland was a challenge, but I wanted to be able to take care of my parents in their old age, and that meant leaving NYC, which really was my muse for 20 years.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am one of the best Architectural photographers in the country, and my work has been in the NYT, Architectural Digest, Elle Decor, and Interior Design. I specialize in corporate, residential, and restaurant interiors, which require incredible focus and attention to detail. My superpower is that I bring order to chaos and create a wonderful visual story of each project I photograph.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
Cleveland is microcosm of America, but you are invited to participate in many groups like printmaking, traditional photography processes, letterpress, and numerous other avenues that don’t exit or would be very expensive in other cities. I love the people-watching, the constant stream of new restaurants, the metroparks, the fact that everything is easy to get to in under 40 minutes.
I work around the corner from the women’s homeless shelter, and it is pretty scary at times. I think we have a lot of issues with access to education, affordable housing, mental health care for those who seek it, and a gentle undercurrent of racism.
