Today we’d like to introduce you to Dan Ball
Dan, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started full time in woodworking and custom cabinetry in 2018. I have been flipping homes since I was 8 with dad. My grandfather had a small wood shop. I was always intrigued by. Before I went fulltime I made custom tables out of my garage on the weekends.
Over the last 6 years I’ve been able to do a lot of cool projects from custom built in office desk in walnut, custom closets, and double helical staircases to name a few.
Custom staircases is where my main passion is. I am going to Rhode Island to the famous Hardwood Design wood shop for a staircase course coming up in September.
I am back to full time after a year of recovery from a work sight accident. I fell backwards off a staircase Feb 7, 2023. Broke my hip and left shoulder. Though I am a little sore some days I have bounced back in the last 6 months. No pun intended.
The future of custom working is slowly fading with retirement of the previous generation. It is hard work and calls for some stressful days. But it is functional art and is so rewarding. I hope to see the younger generations start to bring back the craft and look to it as a means to produce art while making a wage.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Nothing is a smooth road. This something that is not taught successfully in a classroom. Sure the basics are. It takes mistakes and errors. Some Long days even nights. In the beginning I had to eat some costs from my own failures to see the little things I like to call the “creeps”. The details can creep up and blow a whole deadline by days. The more projects I do the better I get at accounting for the “creeps”.
We’ve been impressed with Crooked Valley Wood Design LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We specifically specialize in visible architectural details. Custom builtins is one of main products. We can do full design and 3D renderings of the project and space. We do custom walls and ceilings. And our main focus is custom staircases whether it be a renovation or complete build.
How do you think about luck?
I’m just lucky I get to work on these beautiful homes. I’m in the process of working on a 1865 farm house that has been totally renovated in the Cuyahoga Valley park.
I’ve worked on the home Matthew Mcconaughey rented while he filmed a movie in Cleveland. I’ve built walnut closet in Brecksville for an amazing client that ask to also work on his 10,000 sqft home in Boca Raton, Fl.
I’ve been lucky, but I also work hard to make sure the clients vision is met.
