Today we’d like to introduce you to Christian Nocera.
Hi Christian, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I spent the first 43 years of my life in Columbus, Ohio. For a long time, my world was defined by high-level tech; I was the IT Manager for a global law firm, living a comfortable, established life. But in 2018, I decided to take a massive leap of faith. I was in a long-distance relationship with my girlfriend who lived in Virginia, and I reached a point where I realized that “home” was wherever she was. So, I quit my job, sold my house, and moved to Newport News to start over.
I took a position as the IT Manager for the Newport News Public Library, we got married, and in 2019, our son was born. That was the year everything started to shift.
Like a lot of guys, I had started using natural soap (specifically Dr. Squatch) because it was the only thing that didn’t irritate my skin. But as I used it, the “IT brain” in me started analyzing the landscape. I loved the natural aspect, but I felt the market for men was still incredibly thin. If I wanted natural soap, deodorant, hair care, and skincare that actually smelled like a man and performed at a high level, I had to shop at several different websites. There wasn’t a single “one-stop shop” for a man who wanted to clean up his entire routine without compromising on scent or quality.
I spent months doing what I do best: researching. I realized that while there were small artisans here and there, the “Total Men’s Grooming” space was virtually empty.
I decided to see if I could build the solution myself. I took nearly 30 years of IT experience and my MBA and treated the launch of Dapper Yankee like a high-level systems rollout. I didn’t just want to “sell soap”; I wanted to build a Direct-to-Consumer (DTC) brand that offered a complete, natural ecosystem for men. I spent months building the site, designing every inch of the packaging, and perfecting the initial scents.
In October 2021, Dapper Yankee officially went live. The following year was a true test of grit. In July 2022, our daughter was born, and suddenly I was balancing a newborn, a toddler, a full-time IT career, and a rapidly expanding national brand. After decades of maintaining complex systems for other people, I’m finally using my IT and business background to build my own legacy. It’s been a wild ride from Columbus to Virginia and back, but bringing the business back to my home state and settling in Troy was the final piece of the puzzle. I’m proud to be building a national brand on my own terms, right here in Ohio.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
“Smooth” is definitely not the word I’d use. For the first three years, I was essentially living a double life. From 8 AM to 5 PM, I was managing IT systems; the second that shift ended, I traded the keyboard for a shipping scale.
I spent those early years fulfilling every single order out of a cramped one-car garage. It was a second full-time job—regularly putting in an extra 40+ hours a week on top of my career—all while making sure I didn’t miss out on being a husband and a dad. The space was tight, the hours were long, and the learning curve for running a business and building a brand was incredibly steep.
Even today, the road has its hurdles. Running a small business in this economy is a constant battle; you’re navigating rising supply costs, shifting marketing algorithms, and the unpredictable nature of consumer habits.
People often ask why I haven’t hired a full staff yet, and the honest, bootstrapped answer is that I’m focused on sustainable growth. In the current climate, I’ve chosen to reinvest every bit of profit back into the quality of my products and the expansion of the brand rather than into a massive overhead.
While I have some great tactical support for social media, ads, and email, at the end of the day, Dapper Yankee is still very much a small, family-driven operation. With the exception of my wife, friends, and family stepping in when things get heavy, I handle the core lifecycle of the brand. I’m the lead on everything from product development and packaging design to marketing, fulfillment, and customer service. It’s a lot of hats to wear, and it means working twice as hard to keep the engine running, but it’s the path I’ve chosen to ensure we stay true to our mission as we continue to grow into a national brand. If a box leaves our facility in Troy, whether it’s headed across town or across the country, I’m the one who personally ensures every detail is right.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
At its core, Dapper Yankee is a high-performance, premium, natural grooming brand designed specifically for men who are tired of settling for ‘average.’ We specialize in creating a complete ecosystem of handmade, small-batch natural products—everything from our signature cold-process soaps and aluminum-free deodorants to our hand & body wash, lotions, premium skincare line, shampoo & conditioner bars, and our cologne collection.
What we’re really known for, and what truly sets us apart, is being a ‘One-Stop Shop’ for the modern man where you can get your favorite scent across several different product lines. When I was researching this industry, I realized most guys had to bounce between multiple websites to find natural products that actually smelled manly and worked well together. I wanted to eliminate that friction. Whether you need a non-greasy lotion, a sulfate-free shampoo, or a bold-scented body wash, you can get it all under one roof without worrying about harsh chemicals like parabens or phthalates.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud of our soap collection. Because we craft everything in small batches, we’re able to maintain a level of artisanal quality and skin-nourishing ingredients that mass-produced bars just can’t match. We take a very disciplined approach to our formulations—following strict IFRA guidelines to ensure every scent is bold and masculine, but also safe and balanced for the skin. Between our seasonal favorites and our year-round lineup, there really is something for everyone. And while our scent profiles are intended to be masculine, we actually have a growing following of women who love our soaps just as much.
I want readers to know that when they buy from Dapper Yankee, they aren’t just an order number to me. My customers are the lifeblood of this brand, and I’ve always felt that a personal care brand should actually be personal. I built this business for the ‘Main Character’—the guy who takes ownership of his life, his family, and his self-care—and I feel he deserves a level of accountability you just don’t get from a big-box corporation.
I personally stand behind every bar of soap and every bottle of lotion we ship because I believe the name on the label is only as good as the person behind it. We’re a national brand with a small-town, Ohio-made heart, and we’re proving that you don’t need a massive corporate lab to create world-class products; you just need a better standard and a genuine commitment to the people you serve.
What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me is integrity—both in my products and in my path. In the IT world, if a system doesn’t have integrity, it fails. I brought that same mindset to Dapper Yankee. It matters to me that when I call a product ‘natural’ or ‘premium,’ it actually is. I’m not interested in cutting corners on ingredients just to pad a profit margin. My customers trust me with their skin and their daily routines, and maintaining that trust is the foundation of everything I do.
Beyond the business, what matters most is intentionality. I made the choice to leave a comfortable corporate career, move for my family, and eventually bring my business back home to my roots in Ohio. I want to show my kids that you don’t have to just ‘punch a clock’ for someone else’s dream—you can use your skills to build something of your own from the ground up.
At the end of the day, I’m most proud of the fact that Dapper Yankee is a reflection of my own standards. Knowing that every order is fulfilled right here in Troy, and that I didn’t compromise my values to build a national brand—that’s what keeps me going during those long nights in the shop.
