Hi Brandie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I have always loved hair and nails ever since I was a little kid. My nana started getting my nails painted when I was around 6 and my mom got me hip to nail designs, how to straighten my hair, use the pressing comb, and even let me play in hair color from time to time. My cousin Kema, was a huge influence in me going to hair school, because she was in cosmetology while in high school and I feel in love with her kit she brung it home. I graduated high school in 2015, and went to cosmetology school two months after graduation and got licensed in 2016. I worked in a few salons over the years and even worked with a few celebrities during the gospel fest in 2018 & 2019 that took place in Dayton. When my dad passed n 2023, life instantly changed and I decided I wanted to open a beauty supply store in a community that didn’t have the access to one and to be able to do things I love. I started my business with my own funds and have seen great progress since we’ve been open. I am looking forward to growing and expanding my business into a bigger brand.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey always starts off smooth sailing, but you define your purpose and mission when the road gets rough. Of course the journey hasn’t been completely smooth as a new small business. One of the biggest obstacle that comes with being a business owner is the funding and revenue that the business brings in. A lot of lenders, banks and credit companies don’t really work with small businesses so theirs always worry on slow days. I wished I would’ve looked into product analysis a little more before ordering certain items opposed to other items. Trying to find the most effective ways to market is always a task because marketing can determine how much traffic you may or may not receive each month, plus you never know whose watching.

I love watching a podcast on YouTube called your favorite aunties podcast. It’s two women that are in their thirties that speak on how to be successful, and be yourself while growing your relationship with God or your religion. I also listen to my bible app and gospel music in the mornings to help get my energy right for the day. I also sometimes listen to NPR tiny desk concerts as well.
