Today we’d like to introduce you to Bethany Turner.
Bethany, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I worked at a local Garden Center for a few years while in high school & absolutely loved all of it. From watering, fertilizer & planting the flowers & plants, I loved it all. I remember around that same time, I saw pictures on social media of huge tulip fields & it just took my breath away. I thought, I want to see those rows of beautiful colors but not have to travel across the world to see them. I then started following flower farms on social media & loved seeing their pictures. It just sparked the fire in me.
Fast forward to spring of 2022, we tore down a chicken coop at our house. I told my husband to not plant grass, because I want to start growing flowers and that is how I came up with the name ‘The Flower Coop’! I started with 6 beds & I keep expanding each year! I now grow more than 15 different types of flowers. I offer fresh cut bouquets, flowers buckets, flower subscriptions, U-Picks and event flowers.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It is never a smooth, straight road. You may think you can grow something as long as it has light, water and warmth, but it is so much more than that. Some days I feel like everything is going great then the next day, I have dead flowers, bugs or diseases. So, it is figuring out what type of flower likes water or like dry soil. Or how to get the soil healthy and full of nutrients so I don’t have to worry about bugs or diseases. But I always have to remind myself that I will kill some of the flowers on accident – you cannot win them all.
It all comes down to Mother Nature in the end. I can stake flowers, but some will still blow over. I can pray for one inch of rain, but we will either get not enough or too much. I can hope for warm sunny days, but we will still get chilly cold days. Mother Nature always calls the shots, and it is up to her in the end.
As you know, we’re big fans of The Flower Coop. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I raise fresh cut flowers, which are all started by seed or bulbs and are all grown outside. I grow more than 15 different types of flowers. A few include Tulips, Dahlias, Sunflowers, Snapdragons, Zinnias, Marigolds, and Peonies
I offer fresh cut bouquets, flowers buckets, flower subscriptions, U-Picks and event flowers.
I offer fresh, local grown flowers that have a great vase life.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I take a risk everyday by growing flowers. The biggest risk is playing cards against Mother Nature.
When dealing with fresh cut flowers, you have a certain window to plant the flowers, cut the flowers and then deliver/prepare the flowers. Definitely have to play my cards right to insure I have the flowers blooming when they are needed
