Today we’d like to introduce you to Adam Langdon.
Hi Adam, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
In the early 2000’s I had plans to run an audio recording studio, but that career field was quickly diminishing. I started photography as a hobby which quickly turned into shooting a few weddings. When I found a “Video Mode” on my camera, I started playing around with short recap videos of events I would capture. I eventually got a job at a church that required audio and video expertise. Through those 9 years, I was able to hone the craft of videography and filmmaking. I started shooting weddings again, only this time I was filming them. I made a few short films that won some awards.
I’ve traveled the world to film documentaries in Japan, Kyrgyzstan, and Burundi, Africa.
And then, about a year ago, I decided to go freelance full-time, and I have enjoyed that freedom. I now primarily work with the IDD field (Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities), where I’m able to shine a light to an often-neglected portion of the population. I have also filmed several commercials as well and continue to branch out, being a full-service production company in Sad Umbrella LLC.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
With any creative endeavor, you learn very quickly how little you actually know. There were projects that I had grandiose dreams of capturing beautiful images but didn’t have the skill or words to articulate what I envisioned. Eventually, you get better, but that comes with practice and actually doing the work rather than buying the latest gear or watching countless how-to videos.
Freelance has been interesting. There’s months of light work, and then there’s back-to-back weeks full of projects. So much of freelancing is not being idle and finding ways to either network, look for other jobs, or practice a portion of the craft.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a cinematographer at heart. I love to create moving, beautiful images that capture emotion and true-to-life moments. I love to travel and experience other cultures and figure out ways to tell their unique stories that bring them honor and recognition.
What I bring to the table is full awareness of what it takes to make a story come to life. Bad audio can ruin a good video. Poor color grading can detract from the content. But ultimately, it is about the story and what you are trying to tell your audience. Story matters above all else, so I try to focus on projects that bring hope, joy, and awareness.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you.
Bad things happen. Good things happen. It’s a matter of how I respond to each issue that gets me through the project. Hard work goes a long way, but sometimes jobs fall through, and you have to let go of a ‘dream job’ and get your mind right for the next thing.
