Meet Abbey Osborne of Engaging Days Senior Enrichment Center

Today we’d like to introduce you to Abbey Osborne.

Hi Abbey, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
When I was 15 years old, I saw a help wanted ad on the laundromat bulletin board. The position was providing companion care for an 85 year old man in my neighborhood. I spent the last year of his life with him, and my time with him was my first experience with caregiving and dementia. I have loved this type of work ever since!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It was really a fluke that I got a job in this field at 15. I was not able to get another healthcare job until I was 20, which meant working a lot of unfulfilling jobs in the meantime. Once I was able to get back into the field, the biggest obstacle was the frustration of seeing how lacking care could be in many settings, especially nursing facilities. Seeing a problem and being unable to fix it was a huge source of frustration to me, but that frustration is what ultimately led me to create Engaging Days!

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Engaging Days is a dementia specialized adult day center offering a highly tailored, person-centered approach to memory care. Our goal is to provide diagnosis appropriate enrichment and care, while giving primary caregivers a break from their daily caregiving responsibilities. Daily offerings include but are not limited to Music Therapy, Pet Therapy, cognitive stimulation, exercise, meals, and outings. We are also able to assist with personal care, ambulation, and other activities of daily living. We believe that there is no reason a person living with dementia cannot still thrive, rather than just survive.

A number of qualities help set us apart from others in the industry, with the biggest being our approach. We work hard to focus on what abilities still remain, rather than those that have been lost. We take a failure free approach to each activity, making sure that all participants can be successful and significantly reducing frustration as a result. We also make it a priority to truly know and understand each client so that we may better serve them. From smaller details like food preferences to larger ones like family dynamics, it all helps us get a better picture of the person as a whole and allows us to give more personalized care.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love the convenience of living and owning a business in Englewood. We are right off the highway and have easy access to anything we want or need. My only complaint is that we don’t have more locally owned restaurant options!
