Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyricha Snow
Hi Tyricha, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’m not sure if I was reached out to about being a hair stylist or a newly aspiring rapper so I’ll talk about both briefly.
As far as being a hair stylist, it runs naturally in my family on both sides. I believe my ancestors were the people that others trusted with their hair. Personally, I found the passion for hair when I was about 12 in the 7th grade. I had a mannequin that I always practiced braiding on. Soon, my sisters & friends started to recognize my talent & let me style their hair. I did it as a hobby & ended up being accepted at Eastland Career for Hair Styling. So exciting! However, it slowly took away that passion. Being forced to do styles that I didn’t like or didn’t care for & all of the book work made it more formal than fun. I still pushed through & passed career center & the state board test to officially become a licensed hair stylist in 2009.
It wasn’t until 2019 that I actually began to work in a professional salon setting when I opened Grafik Tease salon & boutique. I was inspired by the stylists & also the freedom that came with making your own schedule & being your own boss. I was always timid to do this because it meant I wouldn’t have a steady paycheck. However, that fear shortly went away after I gained a great amount of clientele. I’m truly grateful for my success as a stylist.
My new career as an aspiring rap artist goes back to when I was about 12 as well, ironically. I always always loved music. I can’t do anything without music. Cleaning, taking a shower, watching TV, cooking, working, driving, just living – I need music lol. I remember writing down lyrics of songs that weren’t mine. Like pressing play & pause 100 times to make sure I wrote them down correctly. I also made sure I wrote down the top 100 songs of the year as they played on BET. Every year for my birthday or Christmas, I asked for a new stereo or some type of portable listening device.
I played around with recording songs on my phone years back but I never really let anyone hear them. I honestly was indifferent about how people would take it. Then, I still had cares about what people thought of me. I was talking to a friend about some of the songs I’ve written & he boosted my confidence tremendously by telling me the potential I had. Coming from him was mind blowing because of how he analyzes music. I found the courage to post some of my music on instagram & from there I’ve been able to build a team that wants me to succeed.
I’m still on the fence about how far I want to take this career because of one thing: fame. I see how celebrities live under the scrutiny of every human being on earth & wonder how they cope with it everyday. It will be an entire lifestyle change. However, I just take it day by day & make sure I stay true to my authentic self during the process. If it’s in the cards, you just might see me on the big screen!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Of course the road hasn’t been smooth lol please show me one that has been. I feel like the natural talent that I have in my DNA when it comes to being a stylist is the smoothest thing. I can say that I didn’t have to have much instruction to learn how to braid. I literally just picked up that mannequin & started going after watching it done so many times.
One of my biggest struggles had to be confidence. I really don’t know why or where it came from but I wasn’t confident that I would be able to get clients, I wasn’t sure if I was good enough to be professional, I was terrified of being able to pay booth rent, etc. So really it was me against myself in most cases.
Unfortunately, COVID had a factor in having to shut down Grafik Tease. That was a major let down to build something & have to let it go. I want to be a salon owner again one day but I know from experience that a hard working like minded team is crucial to success & I have yet to build that whole team. So, with that I’m taking my time.
Also, there are times during the year that are slow seasons for stylists. I feel like the recent inflation has had a great impact on that. So, I have to be sure to properly plan & budget during those times which can still be challenging.
As far as the rap career, the funds are the struggle! Whew it costs more than you think to buy a beat, record on the beat, have the track mastered, promotion for the track, a photoshoot for the video, & the video lol $$$$$ so I’ve been doing what I can as I can building in the background. With this, I’ve unintentionally signed up to be a model, actress & dancer as well because they all tie into one another.
I’m also a little hard when it comes to criticism. It’s taking some work to be able to accept all types of feedback from all different types of people. I’m in the process of filtering out whose opinion matters to my success & when I should stand my ground on a decision. With me being the face, I have to make sure I have a clear say on what goes on in my career.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a hair stylist & an aspiring rapper.
I mainly specialize in braids & extensions but I provide other services as well.
I’m known for being a personable stylist. My clients always tell me that’s what they love about me. They also compliment my professionalism as well as the true care for their hair. They love that I wash & blow dry their hair prior to styling. I provide the hair for their styles as well so they love that they can just come as they are for their service & leave feeling beautiful & amazing. This sets me apart from others.
I’m most proud of being a successful self made entrepreneur. I took a bet on myself & it ended up being a positive turning point in my life.
As far as the rap career, I wouldn’t say I have a specialization yet. I’m just really taking different beats & seeing what I can do with them. I love having music me & my girls can dance to but when it’s me playing, it makes all the difference. I’m proud of myself for even taking the initiative to put my music out to the public. & it’s almost been a year & I’m still at it, trying to get a little more consistent. I’m in the process of making sure I set myself apart from others in this area.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
The hair industry has always been going places & will still go places now & forever. Trends come out literally everyday with the social media outlets we have now. People always want to look good even under terrible circumstances. I hope we become known as essential workers because what we do is essential. Especially for those that have the slightest clue of how to even put a ponytail in their hair. Trust me, I’ve heard it lol.
Honestly though I don’t really get into all of the trends & crazes. Some of them are so far out there lol. I do try some of the new styles that I like but for the most part I keep it nice & neat my way. My clients definitely know that about me.
As far as the music industry, I think it’s becoming more & more popular for artists to be independent & not need a major record label to be successful. Streaming & distribution has changed the industry by far. That gives me an advantage being aspiring because I don’t necessarily have to worry about impressing a big label, I can start right here in my city & reach the world with social media without those pressures & build with my team. Then, we can have our own label that we can control ourselves.
