Today we’d like to introduce you to Sierra Hairston.
Hi Sierra, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Chef Hairston is a Toledo native, and is a two-time culinary school graduate — graduating from the Columbus Culinary Institute at Bradford School in 2013 and attending Owens Community College for culinary arts in 2015. She said she wanted to attend both schools to sharpen her skills, but to also see the difference between the two programs.
Following graduation from both schools, the chef said she did catering jobs and worked locally in the field for a while before opening Brooks Bar & Grill in 2016, which closed in 2018. She then began focusing on her catering business and eventually opened a food truck in 2021 and ran that for two years before it was stolen.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
After losing the food truck, she solely did private chef jobs, and was able to travel around the country to do so. Her latest project is RARE Savory Taste Kitchen, which opened in June at 2903 Dorr St. Suite 9. The restaurant is open for lunch Tuesdays through Fridays, dinner Thursdays through Saturdays, and brunch on the weekend.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Sierra Hairston is all of that and more. The area chef is known for her comforting, home cooked meals, noting she’s someone who prefers savory cooking over sweet.
“I am in between casual food and fine dining,” Hairston said of her cooking style. “I am the unique piece right in between, right in the middle.”
