Portrait of a True American Artist Paul Jennis Portrait of a True American Artist Paul Jennis: The Man, the Anomaly Paul’s passion to become an artist began when he was very young. Instinctively understanding the full-color spectrum and the relationships of forms and shapes along with the ability to express that understanding onto a canvas was a gift. By the time Paul was seven years old, his artistic talent was expressing itself in his first-grade classroom. Paul’s parent wasted no time in enrolling him in private art lessons to encourage his talent and love for the arts. Paul was one of the youngest students to attend the Arts Students League in New York, one of the oldest art institutions in the United States founded in 1875. Paul was taught using a framework, based on the nineteenth-century French atelier system that enabled a pluralistic and inclusive education – one that cultivated both the technical and intellectual components essential to developing the skills of visual artists. Paul attended the Rhode Island School of Design, received his BFA from Syracuse University where he was Number 1 in his illustration class, studied abroad in Italy, and also studied under, Joe Bowler (from the famous Charles E cooper studios and illustrators hall of fame) one of the best portrait artist in the world. Paul began his artistic career as an illustrator. Paul’s illustrations appeared in all genres, such as the classics for Tor Books, a publishing company based in New York City publisher of science fiction and fantasy titles; Men’s Adventure Books for Bantam, publisher of Indiana Jones, Superman, and Tom Sawyer; Harlequin Romance Novels, Simon and Schuster’s the Bobbsey Twins, for many years, the longest-running series of children’s novels, to name a few. Paul’s works appeared in many magazines including Woman’s World, Good House Keeping, Reader’s Digest, and also an illustrated book with Greg Norman, an Australian golfer who was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2001. For decades, millions of “Gone with the Wind” fans fell in love with the burning passion of Scarlett O’Hara and Rhett Butler. These impetuous, ill-fated lovers are immortalized through the artistry of acclaimed artist, Paul Jennis, in the award-winning, Timeless Passion Collector Plate Collection exclusively licensed, limited edition from the Bradford Exchange. Paul became an overnight success touring the country with Thomas Kinkaid and gaining worldwide recognition in the collectable plate industry. The “Gone with the Wind series of 24 plates stands today as one of the most successful highly collected plate series in Bradford history. Official Portrait of New Jersey Governor Richard Codey Paul placed his mark with the Civil War Trust Company when he captured central figures in history through his pencil drawings of civil war generals and soldiers on horseback. These drawings now are highly collected art pieces. The Civil War Trust Company, now the American Battlefield Trust, is a charitable organization whose primary focus is in the preservation of American battlefields including the American Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. Paul’s art collection includes portraits, murals, pastoral landscapes, historic landmarks, and the Masters, still life, classic cars, and motorcycles. Paul’s portraits include a portrait of President Clinton, governors, Supreme Court justices, Forbes 100 CEOs, hospital administrators, athletes, a United States Army general, a college professor, and family portraits. Paul’s murals grace the walls of churches, hospitals, and institutions. One of Paul’s masterpieces is of Hunterdon County, New Jersey’s Tri-centennial, a triptych mural, a work of art that is divided into three sections that are integrated into a single unit. Recently Paul has created 28 original oil paintings for Topps Baseball cards and looks forward to continue working with them. Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There are always struggles in an artist career. Breaking into a particular area of art whether its portraits, sports art, book covers, Murals. There is always a challenge to get the right people to see your art and to consistently maintain that high of a skill level to stay in that field

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My specialty is to capture the likeness and soul of my portrait subjects. I work in many layers of paints but I first compose the work in Photoshop in which I am an expert and create a photo sketch to work out any problems.
