Today we’d like to introduce you to Melinda Payne.
Hi Melinda , thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Over 10 years ago, my business journey began with a simple conversation with a friend.
At the time, I was working a corporate 9-to-5 job, but I felt unfulfilled and knew I wanted something more meaningful. I started asking trusted family members and friends a question: “If you could choose a career for me, what would it be?” Most of the answers centered around helping others, but one response stood out. A friend suggested that I become an event planner.
The moment those words were spoken, I felt an immediate connection to the idea and decided to pursue it.
I started by asking family and friends if I could help plan their special events. A friend gave me the opportunity to plan his birthday party, and shortly afterward, a family member entrusted me with planning their wedding. Those early experiences confirmed that I had found my passion.
After those first events, business slowed down significantly. That challenge pushed me to learn about marketing, networking, and the importance of building strategic partnerships. I also created an annual community outreach event, which became a powerful platform for serving others while increasing visibility for my business.
As a result, my work began gaining recognition throughout my community, city, and beyond state lines. The exposure led to opportunities to mentor aspiring entrepreneurs and event professionals through local schools. It has also been an honor to receive recognition and awards, including being named one of the best event planners in the city.
What started as a conversation has grown into a thriving business built on service, community impact, and a passion for creating memorable experiences for others.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The journey has not always been smooth. Like many entrepreneurs, I encountered challenges that tested my determination and forced me to grow both personally and professionally.
I struggled with questions that many business owners face: How do I properly price my services? How do I hire, train, and retain a reliable team? And perhaps the most frustrating question of all: Why aren’t people calling me back to plan their events?
There were moments of doubt and disappointment, but each obstacle became an opportunity to learn. I invested time into understanding the business side of event planning, refining my processes, strengthening my marketing strategies, and improving the client experience. I learned that success is not just about having talent; it is also about building relationships, creating systems, and consistently showing up even when results are not immediate.
Those challenges taught me perseverance, adaptability, and the importance of continuous learning. Looking back, the obstacles that once felt like setbacks became some of my greatest teachers, helping me build a stronger business and become a more effective leader.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
When I first started my business, I was intimidated by the idea of creating event design concepts. I questioned my creativity and often wondered if I had what it took to bring a client’s vision to life. Instead of allowing that fear to stop me, I committed myself to learning and growing.
I began by observing experienced designers, studying industry trends, and teaching myself the fundamentals of event design. Most importantly, I invested in professional training and design classes that helped me develop both my skills and confidence. Those educational opportunities proved to be phenomenal, giving me the knowledge, techniques, and creative foundation needed to elevate my work.
Over time, what once felt like a weakness became one of my strengths. Today, I am able to create memorable event experiences and customized design concepts that reflect each client’s unique vision while exceeding their expectations
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I believe that anyone who starts a business is a risk-taker. Entrepreneurship requires courage because there are no guarantees. At some point, you have to take the leap of faith; otherwise, you may spend the rest of your life wondering, “What if?”
There is a quote that says the richest place in the world is the cemetery because so many people leave this world with their dreams, ideas, talents, and gifts still inside them. They never share what they were uniquely created to offer because fear, doubt, or uncertainty holds them back.
For me, that is not how I want my story to end. I want to leave this world empty—not because I have nothing left to give, but because I have given everything I was blessed with. I want to know that I shared my gifts, used my talents, served others, and made a meaningful impact along the way.
Our gifts are meant to be shared. They are blessings, and we should be excited and willing to use them to inspire, uplift, and help others. When we step into our purpose and freely give what we have been entrusted with, we create opportunities not only for ourselves but for the people whose lives we touch.
